Valvetronic motor relearn

I recently had to replace my valvetronic motor and gasket and I’ve read that all I need to do for the motor to relearn is to just turn the ignition on and wait like 30 seconds. But I’ve also read that you need to reprogram it with a scanner. When I just turned the ignition on I didn’t hear any noise of it relearning so I don’t really want to try and start it and ruin the new motor.
