Help driving manual
So I picked up my E92 335xi and am new to driving manual. I've read a lot of stuff online and practiced some but am really nervous about inclines. Is anyone willing to help me out a bit by showing me some tips, etc? I am willing to pay for your time.
Thanks. |

The way I learned was OFF THE ROADS. This is where you could be a danger to yourself and others. Practice in your neighborhood if they are quiet back-roads, or find parking lots with slight inclines, etc. Good luck, and dont forget the friction point! Good luck. What specific questions do you have?

I actually took a bunch of lessons a long time ago but never owned/drove a manual transmission car before. On flat ground I can do ok but shifts aren't smooth yet. The problem is there are a lot of inclines near me (Waltham) so I don't feel comfortable driving the car. I've read a bunch of theory online but would like some help with hill starts using the hand brake.

the cool thing about your car is it has an anti role back feature.....when you move your foot off the brake and onto the gas pedal, the system keeps the brakes on until gas is applied for about 1 second.....enough time to get your car moving forward. cheers,

Thats a cool anti roll-back feature! My A4 diddnt have that.
Dont be afraid to give it too much gas from a stopped incline. This is the only way you will learn. (Obviously you have to give it more rather than less or you will stall) So get up around 4500 RPM and ease that clutch pedal out. Practice on flat using just the gas so you can feel what 4500 is like. Also practice finding the exact friction point on flat too, this will give you a good feel for exactly where it is. Then move to a slight incline and give it a shot! Going up beyond 4500 RPM in a brand new bimmer before end of break-in period is not advised. PS Dont blow the engine! JK Be sure to let us know how it goes.

Rasheed, glad to see you are getting some help!
You'll get it man, don't worry. And BTW our afternoon of practice helped push me to get an E90... Haha... Picked on up yesterday and got rid of the little red car... Anyways, don't be afraid to give it some gas man! Throttle is key! You have the mechanics down (must be the engineer in you) now just get the practice out of the way! |
