Nick I'll keep you updated and hopefully keep you in the BMW camp I am confident that the OEM cooler will make the car manageable (250-260 temps) and the VK cooler will save the engine (230 temps)

Yea, thanks Dave, fingers crossed for you. 230F would be awesome oil temp. That is around the max temp I would be comfortable with for a long term keeper

Also have you thought about a 'sandwich adapter' type water cooled setup for your aftermarket oil cooler?

http://www.flex-a-lite.com/auto/html...-adapters.html

Not sure if that works in the E90 due to the weird filter placement. The OE oil cooler on turbo subarus uses that arrangement and the fluid temps are rock solid at all times

So I definitely put a floor jack through my radiator today.... I jacked up the car on the center jack point like always but I guess I didn't get a good enough chunk of the jack point and the car fell off the jack pushing the jack through I would assume the radiator being that coolant shot out from under it. So.....no more Pocono this weekend....no Glen next week....this blows. I guess I'll get that fixed and see where I'm at after that. Ugh

Man, that sucks. Good thing you weren't underneath the car.

I know it doesn't help now, but for the future, I generally use the rear "side" jack point. The front has such a stiff bar that the front wheel doesn't droop much.

So you can just jack the rear jack point on each side and that whole side comes up, giving you access to both tires.

I used to use the rear points but the center is so much faster I learned my lesson I guess. I wasn't even going for the tires, if I were I would have used the side point. I went to an auto parts store and picked up 15W50 to swap out during the lunch break and was jacking it up to give me access to the drain plug. It was all so that I could cool my car down so it would stop f*cking limping on track. Well.....I....cooled my car down.....

Nice review. Yea I've been aiming to get the VK cooler since it was first discussed. That's why I got the OE cooler so I could upgrade. The OE cooler is flat out subpar. Sooooo yea as soon as my bank account stops whimpering I'll be upgrading

Jack broke your radiator, and now the 15W50 is going to break your turbo's.

I don't know about that. I ran 15W50 for a while and everything was fine. I don't see why everyone is so afraid of heavy oil. The N54 obviously shits bricks when you put 5W30 in it and try to move... I don't see how running something a bit heavier will suddenly destroy the engine...

Less power with the thicker oil. Less longevity as well. It won't immediately break your car and it depends on how you drive. The more you track, the more wear on the motor. Track miles are much more severe on the powertrain than street miles. And with a turbo motor thinner oil is better. Call RedLine oil and ask their technical advisors.

"15W50
The ultimate high-temperature protection and recommended for street use. Good for engines that regularly run very high oil temperatures. Best for engines that run large clearances, big displacement, and racing engines that see occasional street use. Popular in air-cooled VW and Porsche applications as well as heavily-boosted turbocharged applications.

Provides 25% more viscosity in bearings than petroleum 20W-50s. Not recommended for use in cold climates where temperatures are at or below 10°F or -12°C. Not recommended for street use in production engines that see sustained oil temperatures below 225°F (those engines should use Red Line 10W-30 or 10W-40)."

Taken from Redline's site.... I am using my car less and less on the street which means my engine is regularly seeing >270 degree temps and >4K revs.... seems right to me? I could run 10W40 but as of right now with the lack of oil cooler or OE cooler I need something to really keep my temps down.

OK. I appears that you want to run that weight so go ahead. It would be interesting to take a poll as to what all the track participants in 335i's are using. I would bet a thinner oil as I believe there is no benefit from the thicker oil except higher oil temps due to the friction within the turbos created from the thicker weight. BMW had no problem running 10W60 in other M cars without turbos. There might be a reason that is not financial as to why they chose 5W30 for their twin turbo set up. I don't care what the literature says on Redline's website. It is generic for "all" applications they deem appropriate. I have both 5W30 and 15W50 in the garage and both bottles say the same exact thing about turbo charged cars. Call their technical assistance line and speak with one of their engineers and I believe they will give you a different answer than you are looking for. I did last year and had a very long conversation with them and chose the 5W30 after arguing the same point as you are. I would never run the 5W30 in my 3.2 E36 race car and run both the 15W50 and 20W50. This motor benefits from the thicker oil vecosity.

What is Herold at HP running?

I've run 10w60 BMW oil. Much hotter oil temps.

Dave, if the 5W30 oil you are using does not shear down to a lower weight you probably don't need to go to 15W50. You can verify the physical properties of the oil though analysis from a vendor like blackstone labs. I think this is one of the best ways to bring tech to oil discussions.

I have no experience with E90, but in my WRX numerous oil analysis show Mobil 1 5W30 shears down to a 20 weight oil (too thin for WRX) I think this is specific to Mobil 1 XW30 products and should not be generalized out to other 5W30

And in regards to the oil, OK I guess I'll have to try something that won't shear down.
