You just need to remember to be a little more careful in the winter.

I am taking my car to Finland, where we have snow for 4-5 months and the roads are not cleared with salt in the winter like you do here.
So what you're saying is I should just buy a set of winter wheels/tires and be happy

For the guys that have driven in snow, how high was it? It gets to be 2-3" in the winter every now and then, I want to make sure I should be able to get through that with snow tires.

I've driven in unplowed snow that was atleast 5 inches high without a problem. I also ended up having to drive in the worst snowstorm we had last year when and the car handled great, snow tires were probably the best investment I've made. With the stock runflats I almost slid into a curb going 15-20 mph, it was sliding with less than an inch of snow.

Yes, that is what I am saying Although I understand the problem with driving a nice car here in the winter with all the salt they put on the roads, it makes the car rusty very fast.

Useless fact of the day: 10% of worlds salt consumption is spread on the roads of North America every year.

On the other hand when you learn how to drive on slippery roads, it can be a looooot of fun

We definately do get a lot of salt, the worst is when you're driving and passing a salt truck and it hits the side of your car with it. The good thing is BMW has a 12 year rust warranty.

Quote:
For 2006 and newer models, BMW provides a 12-year limited warranty, without mileage limitation, for defects in materials or workmanship that may result in rust perforation of the vehicle body. The rust proofing coverage begins on the date of the first retail sale or the date the vehicle is first placed in service as a demonstrator or company vehicle, whichever is earlier.

Driving in the snow with rear wheel drive improves with experience. Getting stuck is totally different. It depends where you park your car. I was stuck twice last winter wishing I didn't have rear wheel drive

there was a time when people drove big rwd cars (think 1970s) in the snow and they did not have the tire tech we do today or traction control. Get snows and you will be fine.

From my experience driving in Rochester NY during the winter, you will be fine with a set of snow tires and knowledge of how to drive in the snow.

Else get the E30 and get snow tires, it may be easier to drive. (that is if you have the space for it and don't mind paying the add'l insurance)
