What is it? Try cleaner wax or a clay bar. Maybe a metal polish, if all else fails

It's brake dust that was not cleaned off in time. I tried a wheel cleaner but that didn't help and I doubt a clay bar is strong enough. I need something fairly abrasive that WONT mess up my wheel (more than it already is).

Just make sure you use an old clay bar that you won't be using on paint anymore, or just rip a piece of a new clay bar off and dedicate it for wheel use only.

Tough pic to determine what it might be. When you "feel" it is it above the wheel surface or more of an indentation?

i had a similar problem with my rims on my benz. Get some Strong wheel cleaner (used the CG wheel cleaner at full concentration) and spray it on and let it sit for a good 15 mins. then agitate with a wheel brush (or toothbrush if your ghetto like me) and repeat. It took me 30 mins just clean one rim.

Megs Wheel Brightener. 100% sure. There are other ways, but this is by far the easiest. Order some today and work on the wheels this up-coming weekend. You can thank me later.

i would use a cleaner fluid.. like swissvax strong.. that would get it out most likly
also i bet the clay you used wasn't very aggressive. that makes a huge difference.. i use p21s gel and a swissvax wheel brush then i use cleaner fluid.. the strong one.. then i clay then cleaner fluid again. |

I'd try a harsh wheel cleaner or sap/tar remover first. If the light stuff doesn't work, you have to bring out the big guns.
FWIW, I clean my wheels thoroughly when I swap them out (summer/winter). Inevitably, there's some tar stuck on them deep inside the rim that I always missed during the weekly cleanings. The first time, after trying wheel cleaners, cleaner wax, clay bar, and so on, I eventually tried rubbing compound, which totally cleaned it off -- but is abrasive, so it's not something to use all the time. Still, I don't even bother with the light stuff for the old stuck on tar I see when I swap the wheels. I just scrape off what I can and use rubbing compound on the mark that's left behind. The wheels end up looking perfect. I'm not saying use rubbing compound, just that if the light stuff isn't working, don't hesitate to use stronger stuff.
