metallic vs non-metallic
I am planning on getting a jet black 335i. What are the advantageous between metallic vs non-metallic paints? I know this depends on person to person, but what leaving taste aside, are there any other benefits?

*In theory* non-metallic paints may hold up a little better than metallic paints (against weather, sunlight, chemicals, etc.). That has historically been the case, but take that only as a rule of thumb, and subject to exceptions in any individual case.

Following various detailing threads/accounts, folks maintain that the metallic black is easier to correct (for the inevitable swirls, marrs etc.) than BMW's non-metallic black. So you may want to take that into consideration.

On my current current Honda, there is a white primerunder my silver paint.
What would be the primer color for Jet black vs Sapphire Metallic Black? |

I have 2 co-workers with almost identical BMW 330i e90 cars in black. One of them is metallic and one is non-metallic. You just can't tell the difference.
Also, the non-metallic paint is easier to match if your car needs partial repainting (bumpers, doors, etc.). If it is for black, I would not get metallic. If its for another color, I would because the metallic would indeed make a difference. |

The one thing I dislike is how susceptible the paint is to chipping ........... I have "heard" that the metallic paints are a little more durable ........... not sure if there's any truth in that.
If you go w/ JB then be sure to get the touch-up paint along with it ........ you'll need it! ![]() FWIW ---- I still believe JB to be the sexiest color when it's shinin' ![]() |
