Is my homelink remote supposed to work without the engine running?

When I first set up my homelink it took me forever to realize that the buttons didn't respond unless the engine was running, not just with the car on... I've lived with it a while, but it's a pain in the ass to have to start the engine again just to open the garage if I park int he drive way and shut it down... it seems like this is something that should work as long as the car is in radio ready and shouldn't be dependent upon if the engine is running or not. Anyone else have this problem?

I got mine programmed but this doesn't seem right to me that the car should be running for it to work. If I get in my car I have to start it up and risk carbon monoxide poisoning before I can open the garage door to drive out?

+1 Which is why I have my radar detector plugged into the Homelink fuse spot. I am not quite sure why they decided to make homelink not work when the car is off, other than just for safety so someone just doesn't get in your car and open the garage door.

Having the radio on doesn't really mean the ignition is on. I do this quite a bit with my garage door. Instead of putting foot on the brake as if your starting, just hit your start engine button (this turns ignition on, without starting car). It will now operate your garage door.

This applies to AT only, right?

with fob in the dash, hit your start button w/o foot on the break. you'll get power on but won't start your car. homelink works then - How it is in my car anyway.

That's is why. Audi is no different in how the homelink works.

No need to hit start button twice...when you put the key in and push on the key it goes into acc-on position, and then with the key in, then hit the start without foot on brake and it goes into starter position (just like turning the key two clicks in a non-push button start car).

I have the comfort access and never put my key in the ignition I always keep it in my pocket... so it looks like when I do that, the first press only turns on the radio, the second press actually puts it into the accessory on position, as long as I dont push the clutch in the car won't start.

You would have to sit in your car for a long time before you would get a whiff of CO. The smell is objectionable, though. Glad to learn there is a way around having to start the engine in a closed garage.

Yea I just programmed my home link as well and realised that it doesnt work unless the car is on. Kind of dumb really. My old G35 garage opener worked any time regardless if the car was on or not.

I have a manual so I can hit the start button w/o pressing the clutch and it won't start, just goes into ON mode. However, I too, don't like the fact that you have to do this to use the Homelink buttons. I asked Tom from EAS if he can add that feature later on to the Remotekey to just power on the Homelink unit with the same type of delay that is used to turn on the convenience lights. So if you opened the door, it would make the give the unit power. The only way he'll add it is if you express an interest in that function and then he can get it incorporated.
