Red face First winter with a BMW - Any help is appreciated

Hey e90post,

This will be my first winter with a BMW car. My specs are as follows - Sapphire Black 2008 e90 335xi, currently running on 19" Style 179 wheels with bridgestone RFT tires.

I would like a Winter tire/wheel set, something that looks nice but at a fair price. I dont know anything about winter setups, so any help i can get to choose which tire/wheel combo i should purchase would be appreciated it. The dealer wants to sell my a wheel/tire combo over $4k -

I would like NON-RFT tires please, the current stock ones are too rough, too stiff and too uncomfortable. Montreal has some nasty pot holes, i already had to replace a RFT within the first 2 months...

+1 but think 17's would even be better.

Check out TireRack site and Gary's thread on 2008 winter tires: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=173971

Snippet from my winter sticky post :

One of the most common package setups would be to choose the Sport Edition A7 or Rial Salerno and pair them up with 225/45R17 Blizzak LM25 or for a runflat the Blizzak LM22RFT.

Garage List
I have ran 18in all season (new tires on oem wheels) and 17in winter tires (new rims and tires from tirerack).

The all seasons were ok and will work. The winter tires were amazing and only 800 from tirerack. I run my winter set about 4-5 months a year, so comparing the amount of tire wear i put on the winter set instead of the higher priced summer tires, its kinda break even in cost for that set.

However, the cheapo 17in set was boring as heck. I always thought my car looked amazing in summer and unique (had 2 performance package 330is) and boring in the winter with plan jane 17s.

This fall I am going to go with 18in winter set (still havent picked it out). Having ran the 18in all seasons, I am 100% confident that I will have zero issues with the wheel size. I have been contemplating a 19in winter set, but you will get flammed on this forums for mentioning that. Probably going to go with the 18in set, as tires for a 19in set are really damn hard to come by.

FYI - tirerack is generally going to be the easiest and best way to get a set do to thier size and user friendly site. My problem with tirerack is I cant find one set on there I really like. Just ones that would do. However, there are some great vendors on this site that can hook you up with some pretty sweet wheel options.
