check the 4 tire pressure it happened to me before i found one of the tyres 55psi and the oposite one is 40 psi so as you know the RFT will call it a flat tyre SO check the tire pressure and reset the system

It happened to me twice, and both times I got the tire repaired for free at Discount Tire. The dealer will want to replace the tire and it will cost you. As long as you didn't drive the car with a tire at (or close to) zero pressure you should be OK. When I get the warning I immediately check the pressure with a gauge I always keep in the car. |

Happened to me once - all 4 tire pressures were normal, so I reset and haven't had any false alerts since. Check your pressures, reset and monitor. You may have a leak. As was mentioned above, it's a good idea to always carry a pressure gauge in your car.

My TPMS light was on for several weeks about 6 weeks ago. I took it to the dealer and they determined that a sensor had gone bad and it was replaced and then everything has been fine. Until this Friday morning...
Just this Friday morning when I started the car there was a large message on the iDrive screen that was a TPMS warning. It even told me specifically that the right rear tire had low pressure. I checked it with my gauge and sure eneough it was down to only 24 psi. When I added air to it with my foot pump (up to between 36-38 psi) the warning was gone and all was fine. Then just 2 mornings later (Sunday) I got the same message about the same tire. This time the psi was down to 23.5 and so I brought it back up to 38 psi and the warning went away. I must have a leak or something. Is BMW going to make me buy a new tire at full price? There's still at least half the tread remaining and they're still the stock runflat's. I'll get it repaired before I buy a new one. I plan to buy new non-runflat's in the spring.

I have a similar problem. Running NON RF aftermarket 19" wheels with TPMS sensors . Had system set for 39psi. Last week i Igot the low pressure light and checked the pressure to find 1 tire at 31psi. Being 8 psi low, the warning light came on as designed. other tires were at 33-34 psi. I re inflated all the tires but the light did not go off. I have been unable to reset the system(no I drive) because it continues to give a low pressure indicator and will not go through the reset procedure.
I set up an appointment to take the car in for service. 1 SA said that they sometimes just have to reset the system. A different SA said that if there is a nail in the tire, it won't reset. Not sure if I believe that second one. BUT, the last 2 time I went in for service , they wanted to do an ECU reprogram . I decline both time. the told me on both occasions it was to fix problems with the TPMS system. Since I had no problems and have been aware of some of the problems associated with the New v29.1 program, I would not allow them to do the upgrade. Has anyone else heard about a TPMS, software issue or fix? |

DrGP,
Luckily for me, they didn't update the progman. I'm still running the progman version from a 7/07 build date. It was my psi light that was on (it said TPMS malfunction) all the time. I checked the psi in all the tires, made sure they were within specs and then did the TPMS reset. After a week of the warning light not going away, I tood it to the dealer and my SA did the same thing and said that the TPMS malfunction message and light should go away within hours or a day at the most. It stayed on so I made the follow-up appiontment... actually, it was time for my first annual oil change also. Here's what is written on my BMW serice invoice: "Tire PSI light on - PSI was set and sensors reinitialized but light stays on -advise". ""Cause: Corrosion in RDC transmitter from water ingress". "Corrosion in RDC transmitter from water ingress test plan stated if water or corrosion is found in RDC transmitter to replace. Inspection of RDC transmitter showed water ingress. Transmitter was replaced and RDC system now operates normally." That was on 21 August. Now I've got a problem with my right rear tire losing about 12-14 psi every 2 days and I get a warning message on my iDrive telling me which tire has low air pressure. Obviously it must be a slow leak, but I wonder if BMW will replace the tire under some kind of warrenty.

Bump...
I'll look at that tire closely tonight and see if there is any visible damage or puncture. Either way, I'll have to take it in this week. My SA told me that tires are not covered under warranty, even road hazzard. If I only have 8k miles on my car, there's a chance it could be a manufacture defect... I guess.

Does anyone know if you have a punctured or slow leak in one of your OEM Bridgeston RFT's if you can get it patched at a tire shop like Discount Tire?

Well its different for me. 06 E90's do not need TPMS's because they read
the tire pressure through the wheel well or something like that. Mine never reset though. I will have to go into the service menu's to do it

Yes. RFT's can be patched just like a normal tire. The problem is that most shops assume you've driven on it with zero air pressure and won't fix it because they assume the sidewall is trashed. Tell them it has a slow leak (probably a nail) and that you have only let the pressure drop to 24 PSI. Go to a mom and pop tire shop, not a chain store, and they'll probably fix it for you. Make sure they can deal with large diameter wheels and run flats. I had good luck with an independent Goodyear shop.

I'm so happy with these tires! I've only driven around town so far, but I can't believe how much of a difference it has made. It's really amazing! They seem to grip better, the ride is much quieter and smoother and seem to handle at least as well on hard corners/turns. I'm very happy and will buy a matching set for the fronts in about 6 months. The tires I bought are Yokohama S-Drive.

Like I said in another post, I like runflats other than there is really no selection other than the OEM brands. I think it is a great concept. Corvettes have been using runflats for at least 10 years now, so it's not a new concept, and I never remember the buying public being so negative about the Corvette's tires.
I also ride a motorcycle. You have to deal with no spare. I've ridden across the country (twice) and do at least one 3K to 7K trip a year. Repair kit is the name of the game. Total tire failure is so rare these days. |
