e90 335i front camber adjustment question

I had my car in for an alignment at the local BMW center and the drivers front camber was slightly out of spec. The tech said the alignment "pin" for the strut assembly (the part of the strut you can seeunder the hood) needed to be removed to allow the camber adjustment. They told me they drill out the pin on the newer cars and then loosen the 3 nuts on the top of the strut and move it slightly inward or outward to get the camber back to spec. Seems weird that BMW would not allow simple camber adjustments to be made without removing a alignment pin used to facillitate installation at the factory. Is what the dealer is telling me how it needs to be done or is this a mickey way of adjusting it?

thanks
