e90 335xi tire bubble

I have an 08 e90 335xi with the sport pack michelin ps2 runflats, and after about a week of ownership I ran over a decent sized pothole that put a big nasty bubble/gash in my left front tire. It looked like it couldn't still be holding air
but when I put a guage on it it was. The tire was nationally backordered so I ended up driving on it for 2 months with no problems.

Now 4 months later the other day I got out of the car and noticed that both right side tires have huge nasty bubbles in them and are holding air fine.

I have never had this happen before in my 14 years of driving and now it's happened to three tires in 5 months on this car. Is is the tires, the suspension or what, and has anybody else had this happen on any 3 series with run flats?

Thanks

Tommy.

low profile tires are very susceptible to this damage. one thing you can do is run higher pressure, the bulges are where the internal sidewall plies tear when pinched between the edge of the pothole and the rim. the bulge is caused by air getting into the soft rubber sidewall.

be warned, you're one bump away from a complete loss of pressure. i drove on a tire with a bubble. it was fine for months untill i hit a 1" ridge in the road. managed to hit the ridge exactly where the bubble was, tire instantly deflated.

is this your first car with 18" low profile tires?

its alot less likely with 17s and almost non existant with 16s.

my 330i suffered one bubble in a potenza s-03 after hitting a bump hard enough to bent a strut.

my S60R went through 6 tires due to sidewall damage. after i started running 38+psi, it stopped happening.

my 335i had one tire go this way, i had the tires inflated to 34-35 psi. after upping the pressure to 37-39 psi, no more bubbles. harsher ride though.

I've had a lot of cars with low profile tires. I currently have a 996tt with 315/25/19's in the back and have never had this problem.

I think it has to do with the runflats and the tendency of the suspension to hit the bump stops so fast.

I'll have to try running the pressure a bit higher after I fork out the 800 bucks to replace these two.

Thanks for the input

You might want to consider wheel and tire insurance. Worth every penny in the NE.

Yea, it seemed like a rip off when the offered it to me for 650. It was a bargain.

If I buy these new tires from tirerack I'll be taking their road hazard insurance for around 40 bucks a tire.

I wonder if I can buy it for the other 2 tires I already own.

Blame yourself and your sheer luck that you damaged your tire. Make sure you send a complain letter to the city transportation department and ask them to start fixing the roads. That will solve your problem.

lol we do that daily here. canada has way better roads...so winter is not to blame. Man...I missed toronto.
