Angry BMW having problems with 2009MY iDrive?

I've been unfortunate enough to have had my iDrive fail in my new 2009MY 330i after about 5 weeks (no response to controller and reboots every couple of minutes). It has been with the dealer for 5 days whilst they have tried recoding it with BMW's technical help (which in itself suggests there may be known issues?) but they have now admitted defeat and decided the CIC (Car Infotainment Computer) is faulty. Now, here's the rub, I am told that there are no replacement units available either here in the UK or in Germany, they are all on backorder!!

Does this shortage mean they are having issues with this new unit, anyone have any ideas or knowledge on the subject? I have made my displeasure known to BMW UK HQ and await their reply...

It's not uncommon for new spare parts to go on backorder for weeks / months since they would use most of their stock in the production instead. Good luck with getting this sorted out. There's a good reason why people shouldn't buy first year German products.

First year cars of any kind always have a higher rate of problems. My 2004 Acura TSX has been a nightmare - electrical failures, HVAC died, headlights had condensation, lighting failed in cabin, etc.

However, BMW and other manufacturers tend to introduce upgrades every year or two. So, if you avoid any new technology, you'll basically never get a new car.

You're probably right Kev, but as Kilgore Trout says, things change so quickly nowadays how long can you wait for technology to become "proved" before it's improved!
