simple. its just a hobby. the fun I find in using a DSLR is there is no limitation of how I want the picture I took to turn out. This is b/c the shot can be in RAW format and every little bit can be photoshopped to how you want the picture to look.
Without shooting in RAW and the ability for post-processing, this guy would not be able to do this...and I think his photos are fkin COOL, so cartoonish yet its so real. http://www.davehillphoto.com/ for pictures that I dont care about post-processing and its just for "the moment", I wouldnt use the DSLR, its just too heavy and expensive toy to bring around to worry about, even with a digi-cam i wouldnt bring around. i'd rather use those nice and easy cheap Fisheye film camera's sold at Urban Outfitter or a Polariod

London Drugs has it for $1399 with 18-105 VR lens... just a bit over $1500 with tax in.

The Dave Hill site has so much post-processing going on that the actual photo taken could have been with a point & shoot; it almost certainly wasn't, but don't let photos like that trick you into thinking that a good SLR will make all your photos look that good.
...and, +1 on the heavy-factor. I've got a D80 with a couple different lenses and it's a PITA to truck all the gear around sometimes. Quote:

www.henrys.com <-- they're in TO, but are one of the most reputable shops in Canada. They have an Ebay page with the occasional amazing deal on open stock or mint condition used gear. I can vouch for them, as I've bought most of my kit from them over the last couple years.
If you want a local shop; Broadway Camera (go see Boris) in Vancouver, or Kerrisdale Cameras would be solid choices. London Drugs, oddly, is also a great place to buy gear; and the sales guys there are pretty knowledgeable. If you're serious about getting into a DSLR, the #1 advantage is lens choice. Spend what you can on a body, and the majority of your budget on lenses. GL. Quote:

yes that is true ^^^^ im using a POS dslr because im a noob and i got it dirt dirty cheap and my lens costs 2x+ then my body...
sometimes i'm pretty amazed at what introductory/basic DSLR can do compared to the high end ones...its all a matter of whose taking the picture...same concept as tracking a car...a noob driving a porsche gt3-RS vs a pro driving a spec miata haha...

Really, the only real advantage that I see with a DSLR over a P&S (point and shoot) is the "bokeh", ie. the narrow depth of field that allows you to tightly focus on your subject and blur out the background.
That and a DSLR system will give you more lens choices, higher sensitivity for low light photography, and faster focusing speed for fast action photography, eg. moving cars, kids, etc. If most of your subject is still and you don't need "bokeh", then a good P&S would suffice.

Is a hobby of mine, + i am going to be taking some newspaper/photography class @ school, so i am wanting a good camera to carry around without having to borrow the ones at school.
hmm, the D90 is tempting haha. But right now, I am in the process of buying a RICOH GX1000, a bit lower end than a GR-D, but still a nice "modern" camera with RAW capability + a 24mm lens!! i will wait till boxing day or after christmas to see if i can get some good deals

The good thing about getting it from Futureshop or London Drugs is that they have price match and price protection for 30 days after purchase. So, as long as you get it AFTER Nov 26th (that's tomorrow!), you'll be getting as good a deal as on Boxing Day!

1D MKII is old already. If you look for second hand market, you can find a body for around 1.5K without much difficulty.
5D's focusing system (including 5DII as it pretty much inherit the same focusing system) isn't up to high-speed photography. If you want to go Canon for telephoto, go Pro bodies. D300 can be had for around 1.2K. Check Craigslist. |
