Anyone else have this problem regarding the breaks?
I have experienced some issues regarding my brakes when the car is parked over night. Every time when I try to start (cold start) the car in the morning after it has been parked overnight, the brake seems to be very stiff/hard. I have to apply a lot of force to step on the brake in order to start my car. I can't seem to figure out what is wrong as the brakes seem to be working fine, and I don't have this problem when the car is warm. Should i take it in to get it check? Any feedback will be appreciated! thank!

OK, so the guy means "brakes"...
I have a 6MT so I don't know if that's normal or not since I only have to push my clutch to start the car... But a brake pedal getting hard when cold doesn't seem odd to me. If it was limp, then that's a whole other story. If you go out and press on your brakes a few times after the engine is off, it'll get hard as well.... |

This has happened to me several times in past winters when it's ridiculously cold. The brake pedal is not limp as if pressure has been lost, it's instead rock solid and I can only depress it maybe half an inch to an inch which thankfully is enough to get the engine started. I always thought this to be normal given the ambient conditions on certain days.

This is a known problem and there is a fix. Service Bulletin reference (SIB) is SI B34 06 07. My car had this problem and it was fixed by the dealer last week. They mentioned a check valve or pipe or something. Itis fine now.

It's the brake vacuum. Well that's what it said on my service sheet. Just ask them to check the brake vacuum, they should be able to fix it.

You probably have a very small vacuum leak. The booster generally hold a bit of vacum after the engine has been shut off so the next few times you press the brakes they should still appear to have the same assist. That said, it is also possible that the actual brake cylinder add a lot of friction when it's cold. Either way since it's a safety issue have it checked.

It's the one way check valve at the brake booster. Under certain conditions, it will cause the booster to lose it's vacuum. The fix is to replace the valve with the hose attached to it.

I really appreciate your help! They actually printed out the bulletin, but the bulletin said this problem would only occur on E90s that were produced up to september 07. My production date is may 08. What should i do?? The car is still at BMWSF.

They can't do the work and reference the bulletin, but they can still diagnose that as the problem. The problem might be known to happen on that production range, but that doesn't really mean anything. I would go to another dealer personally.
But basically, let them know that you need the problem fixed. There is a known issue, and if they want to satisfy the customer, they'll try to fix it. |
