Life of RFT

My car has done 13500km .Found that steering is less stable and handling is less less grippy. Check in BMW dealer and nothing wrong. Is it the time to change the RFT? What is the normal life of RFT?

RFT's are garbage in my opinion. I can agree with the safety arguement, where if you lose pressure you can still drive on it. But the noise of these tires, unpredictable handling and ride quality just make driving the car miserable. It really has affected me.
Am I the only one that feels this way? I have the Continental non-sport RFT's. Are the sport RFT's any better?
If I wasn't leasing, I would change the tires to non-rft's.

I share the same sentiment on RF's... I have actually had many setups so far...

- 161's (17 inch) with OEM RF's - Ok ride, noise level was rediculous, wanted 162's so I got them...

- 162's (18's) with Pirelli Non-RF - Better ride, better handling, much less noise, but in big trouble if I get a flat...

- same 162's, but now with OEM RF's - back to a noisy, bumpy ride. Still had a slow leak in one tire, and got a nail in another. Ended up replacing one tire, patching the other... the replacement cost me $375 including mounting and balancing... for one tire

So here is where I am going to go from here... Im going with non-rf's when I wear through my current set...

I will also have an all season setup (winter tires are not completely necessary in VA, but cant run on summers all year long). On long distance trips, I will keep one of the extra wheels in my trunk just in case...

I have no problem with my RF tires so far and i got 12000 miles on them. They handle fine. Im using bridgestone potenza RE 050A. But i think the Continental RFT's have some issue cause a friend of mine had em on a 530i and he's leasing the car too. The dealer had a recall on them and had to change the tires. Reason being that the noise level is very high and it creates some allignment problem. You should check with the dalership and see if its been recall. The continental are your OEM tires right?

Yes they are OEM. I need to make an appt to get my Assisst/SOS module turned on. When I go in for that, I will ask about the tires. Thanks for the heads up

I have the 18in sprt Bridgestone RFT. Love it, sound decently quite to me. They have provided me with 22,500 miles. Need to replace them at 25,000 Miles I think. Only negative issues I have is the Bridgestone back order deal.

I was at the dealer yesterday and noticed that the M5 and M3 did not have RFT's. Why not you ask? Well according to the salesman those cars need the performance of non RFT's. M3 has no spare but a mobility kit and don't know about the M5. Some people have also mentioned that the car is setup for the RFT's and changing it could affect the handling characteristics. Bottom line is that I'm changing to Mich PS'2 unless something better comes along. If I get a flat then I will change it and get it fixed like everyone else does when they get a flat.

Let me know how the car handles on the PS2's

I just went to Discount Tire today for a slow leak on my driver's rear tire... The guy said the tire warranty would be voided if he patched the tire. Looks like I'll be picking up some new rims/non-RFT's sooner than I thought.

If you purcahse wheel and tire insureance from the dealer, what does that EXACTLY cover? It only applies to OEM tires and wheels correct? If you purchase aftermarket wheels or tires, then the warranty is null and void?

that is correct...

Make sure the insurance also covers bent rims. Many times a bent rim could cause some serious problems just like a faulty tire can...

Of course I would have to get a mobility kit. Still searching for a doughnut that will fit. What do you think the M5 and M3 drivers do? Mobility kit.
