Something to remember with snow tires....

Had to go out and run some errands today. Let me start with... had to. No one should be on the roads in Portland right now. Also important for the story, I'm rocking Conti WinterContact TS810's.

So I'm driving through an industrial park. Long straight roads. Pretty slick. If I got on the gas even a little in 4th at low rpm's, traction control would come on. Doing a few under for safety's sake. Some dude in an Escalade catches me and decides to ride my ass for a while. The road opens into two lanes so he moves to the other one but still sits in my blind spot. Sweet driving. We get close to a light and all of a sudden, it turns yellow (they do that for some reason). I was too far away just to coast through, so I jump on the brakes. With the help of a good bit of ABS, I get stopped just before the intersection. Dude in the Escalade slides about 3/4 of the way through the intersection before he can stop. What would have happened if we were still on a 1 lane road?

Moral of the story: Just because you have snow tires, it doesn't mean the douche tailgating you in the Escalade does!

Ha, amen to that brother. I worry more about the jackass behind me than anything, in shitty conditions i jump on the brakes long long before i even have to just to get them to woah up.

This is a good story. Theres a lot of idiots outa there drive really fast with summer on ice and snow and i always wonder if they got any idea of how dangerous it is. In fact i think driving fast in the winter is a lot more dangerous than speeding on a summer sunday morning.

And that is why I'm not bothering to put winters on my E90 335i! I simply will not drive this car in conditions that require winter tires. If things get a little dicey, I'll take my AWD Durango. It does awesome, but if some jackass hits me because he is clueless, I'm only out about $10,000. I'm not worried about my skills in the bad stuff, it is the average run-of-the-mill SUV idiot who thinks 4x4 makes them invincible that I'm worried about.

Thankfully in your case the jackass moved over, because for sure you would have been hit. On the other hand, you sound like a very aware driver, so I imagine you would have continued through the intersection on the yellow and taken your chances, knowing the Escalade tailgateing you would result in an impact.

Good on you for having your car properly equipped for the conditions!

Nothing makes me more angry than some people here complaining about their 335i being "shitty in the snow on sport tires." As if summer tires should work in the snow!

Yeah, I think the next step is to sell the winter setup and buy a beater! Just a note, I parked the car when I got home and started drinking. It's been a day of cleaning, watching movies and eating chili. No one should be out in this crap!!!
