US cost of a 325
Works out at 16,572.8 GBP
And thats for Manufacturer retail price. Why do we pay so much more?

I saw a post re NJ tax and that came to around $2K or $3K. That would only add on £1.5k to the price. The UK would roughly pay around £25k for a 325.
Not sure on price if anyone (uk) wants to chip in.

Local taxes are at fault but also the fact that BMW want to sell at a higher price here and hey can get away with it. MB are even more expensive ! Audi are cheaper.
What I notice more and more is that you almost have to have the top model BMW to have the prestige of 'having a BMW' since they are so popular with the company car drivers (becuase they tax less and hold their value better) and also with some very chavvy types too - kinda cheapens it a bit really even though we are paying more !! Fair to say though that I imported my first 325 in 2000 and saved £7000 and then got a £5000 discount on my first 330d and £3000 off my second one in March so I guess its not as bad as it seems .... Still the cheapest cars I hav ever run by miles |

The import was from the Netherlands through a broker to UK spec plus some extras. A lovely car actually. I really missed it for a while. I go so fed up with the harshness of the MSport ride after a while and I missed the quietness in traffic of the petrol. But the Diesel engine got quieter and I enjoyed the better handling if never the ride which was pretty awful. The new one is leagues better....

What is interesting to me is that premium cars are extremely cheap in the US but it doesn't extend too much beyond that. For example a Subaru Leagacy 2.5 turbo is only a few thousand dollars less than a 325 but in Australia there is a wide gulf between the pricing of Subaru and BMW that just isn't present here

These are supposed to be on the road prices for an M5 around the world:
United States 81,200 USD / 81,000 USD 3000 Gas Guzzler Canada 120,000 CAD / 98,000 USD Switzerland 121,468 CHF / 101,000 USD 7.6%VAT Germany 86,200 EUR / 104,000 USD 16% Sales Tax Hungary 26,153,500 HUF / 105, 000 USD United Kingdom 61,000 GBP / 105,548 USD Sweden 827,000 SEK / 107,000 USD Belgium 89,400 EUR / 108,000 USD Guatamala 835,835 GTQ / 110,000 USD Lithuania 332,145 LTL / 117,000 USD Saudi Arabia 450,030 SAR / 120,000 USD Serbia & Montenegro 103,663 EUR / 124,810 USD WITH 44% TAX South Africa 832,142 Rand / 142,000 USD Greece 119,000 EUR / 143,000 USD Argentina 439,318 Peso / 150,000 USD Netherlands 129,350 EUR / 159,000 USD Finland 133,184 EUR / 160,000 USD Portugal 140,000 EUR / 170,000 USD Phillipines 10,038,600 PHP / 180,000 USD Austrialia 245,358 AUD / 185,000 USD Iceland 11,300,000 ISKR / 185,000 USD Hong Kong 1,602,000 HKD / 206,000 USD China 1,738,065 Yuan / 210,000 USD Turkey ???? / 216,000 USD Norway 1,531,000 NOK / 232,000 USD Brazil 582,000 Real / 240,000 USD Denmark 1,715,000 DKK / 300,000 USD 179% Taxs This is from October 05 so the exchange rates may well have changed, but the figures include local taxes and offer a good idea of the variation in price of cars around the world. So the USA has a pretty good deal - but the UK isn't as bad as some places. The differences mainly seem to be about tax (Denmark has horrific new car taxes0 - but I also think the MRRP changes to some extent as you move around. |
