Fuel Mileage affected by 20"s

Hey guys, just wondering if any other owners experience a 5-7 MPG drop after putting 20's on their 330i.

I realize there is more unsprung weight and requires more torque to move the wider tires. etc....

Any thoughts?

My 20 inch DPE's actually felt considerably lighter than my 162's with RFT's when we were switching them out.

However, the rotational mass of the 20's is greater than 18's. My gas mileage has dropped about 2 mpg city driving.

What are you getting in the city/highway w/ the 20's?

First off, my MPG is really bad because I do 95% city driving and lots of short distances like 6 miles to work, 2 miles to school, etc....

Before the 20's I was getting like 20-21 MPG

After the 20's I'm getting 18-19 MPG

330i 6mt, btw.

BTW,

If you do go with 20's...or any sized wheels for that matter just make sure they aren't heavy. I think more unsprung weight plays a larger role in killing performance than rotational mass.

On my last car I had 20 inch chrome wheels that were MAD HEAVY on my g35 (don't make fun of me, chrome was popular back then lol).

Once I took them off my car gained like 7 mpg better and it felt like my car gained 50 horsepower. I feel like the weight on the wheels was the killer more than anything.

I get anywhere from 24-26 mpg ever since I put my 20s on. It was the same when I had my stock 16s on.

Do you do a lot of Highway driving? I suspect this is the case, but I could be wrong.

Does the tire height mess with the true reading of the odometer...would that make your gas mileage better or worse

I used to get 320-340 miles/tank. With my new wheels, I never get more than 290 miles. That's 3mpg loss.

Ditto...I am getting around 300 mi. per tank, and that's with 70% highway driving. I have slushbox, and I have found I get a little bit better mpg in sport mode.
