Question BMW's next generation NAV Question?

A friend of mine told me that BMWNA is working with NAVTEQ and GOOGLE to provide real life 3D imaging for their next generation NAV system. I wounder if the next generation NAV will be like Google Earth?

i'm not sure who they work with or at what stage of development they are with this project but i'm pretty sure they must be doing something like that. there are already cars out there using these technologies (Acura, VW) and they are leaps and bounds ahead of anything what's BMW is using right now. live traffic updates, rerouting, traffic warnings are simply the next natural step in in-car navigation systems.

I don't know if there's any truth to that, but it would be sweet!

His friend works at BMW so I would consider it a good source. But I find it difficult to belive that all the data could fit on a single DVD! Unless the next generation NAV comes with it's own Hard Drive?

That would be SWEET! Not only would you have complete map data in the U.S. but you can probably also store all business numbers, Zagat restaurant reviews, and restaurant menus as well! Oops, wait, Acura already has this!

Yes, the live traffic updates I have hear of on many occasions, but a 3-d nav system as stated in the original post doesnt sound like the area that BMW needs to improve on.

BMW has not been the leader in cutting edge electronics, but I would expect some updates in 3-5 years or so...

Live traffic updates, re-routing & traffic warnings are already available in SatNavPro-equipped e90s in the UK & other European countries, due to the availability of TMC (traffic management channels) via radio broadcasts.
It is not a new technology- not over here, anyway.

A logical next step for SatNav would be to make use of live map updates using a combination of 3G mobile technology & bluetooth.
However, I can't see that appearing until BMW/Navtech/Google etc start working together & are in a position to produce a workable protocol & pricing structure.

the B8 A4/A5 will use the next gen Nav+ II with google/navtech
to create a nav using google hybrid, and google maps for navigation.
VW will use it to about a year after its in the first Audi.

Well UK owners can get excited from the sat nav mock-up in the new "It's only a car" advert which is running on TV at the moment - that's got a nice 3D mockup that looks NOTHING like what we've got at the moment

And there was an article in the BMW owner's magazine a couple of months ago about live traffic updates and re-routing. Eventually they plan for all cars in the local area to 'talk' to each other - if one is stuck in traffic, and another plans to go that way on it's route, then data will be sent through and the route diverted, etc.

Clever stuff. Might be a bit Buck Rogers though.

You mean this, Gareth:

It looks like a mockup, but who knows- perhaps that's the next generation of BMW SatNav?!

I know, but there'll be a whole load more 'cars' at Donington Park on Saturday September 23th at 12pm.

SatNav will be just one of the things we'll be talking about there, I'm sure.

Sign up below, & get yourself down there, Gareth!

Now there's a thought..

Went to the Goodwood Festival of Speed a few weeks ago, and spent far too long on the BMW stand there, including a rather lengthy stay behind the wheel of a brand new M6 (almost pant-wettingly good) - it's got a different iDrive controller - is that purely cosmetic, or does it have an equally pretty look to the software too?

The guys on the stand were too mean to start her up for me to see..

The pic below makes the m6's idrive display look pretty similar to the e90's.
However, I haven't experienced it for myself, so am unable to tell if it does actually work any differently.

k-navigation

This is called 'k-navigation' that comes with all 5 and up series sold in Korea. It is known to be developed by BMW germany only for the customers in Korea for its growing market there.

It doesn't look quite like the 3d google earth, but at least it shows the building in 3d!

It comes with English as well as Korean (text and the voice navigation), so traveling korea now would not be as hard as before..

Just noticed on that M6 iDrive pic, there's an enevlope icon next to the cell phone display - does it support text messages with a compatible phone? Is this something new?

The Korean system looks cool. Let's keep optimistic
