I escalated it to someone else and they agreed to take care of that (and a few other pesky issues). Have an appointment in about 2 weeks, as the dealer is booked solid right now -- but I am content to wait that long if it takes care of these annoyances. Whew.
The first response was accurate. Just because a new software version comes out doesn't mean you can get it free. The warranty will cover the installation if there is a problem with the car that the new version is intended to fix. Apparently you said the magic words to the second person that knew about the various issues. Good luck to you. We expect your report in triplicate in two weeks.

OK, a single copy will do.

Man that warning screen is irritating. Just about everyday I get in the car, the key symbol pops up with an annoying 'bong', because I put the key in a split second before getting the door closed, then another 'bong' and another symbol because I don't have my seatbelt on yet, Then another 'bong' to tell me my seatbelt is now on, then I put it in reverse, and back out of my parking space, and when I've backed all the way up, then the warning message goes away in time to let my park distance control display flicker on just before I put it in first gear... yeah it's really fun hearing all that chiming and reading that warning message while you're backing up without the benefit of your PDC you paid for.

How's this for a better design: give a 1-2 second delay before the key alert and seatbelt alert is triggered, and disable the warning screen immediately when the reverse gear is engaged - and KEEP the PDC screen active as long as the car is still rolling backwards (not just in reverse gear).

edit: I know I know, close door first, put on seatbelt 2nd, insert key 3rd, start car and wait 8 seconds for warning to go off, put in reverse, ahh! Just like in NIN's March of the Pigs -"doesn't it make you feel better?"

Incidentally, I did finally get the software update, and it did in fact fix the aforementioned issues, thanks.

Probably most on this sub-forum already saw my post in a related thread, but in case someone searches this thread in the future, I don't want to leave anyone hanging...

You can turn off the display using one of the menus but I can't for the life of me understand why you'd want to do that except if you want to take a nap in your car. If you have the six memory buttons you might be able to program it but there are so few things you can actually program onto those buttons I doubt this is one of them.

I programmed on/off of the monitor to one of my programmable steering wheel buttons. I use it quite often - sometimes (especially at night) I'd rather just have the monitor off. It's also pretty cool when using the nav. If the monitor is off while you have the nav giving you directions, it will turn the monitor on only when there is a turn coming up. It shows/tells you what to do and then shuts off again.
