Talk radio
Any fans of talk radio? I first heard Joe Pyne in the early 60's. I was quite young and quite entertained by Pyne's confrontational style. I'll never forget his favorite opening line for callers, "Hello, this is Joe Pyne, what's your beef"? Funny stuff for a certain 8-year old.
These days I like to listen to Michael Savage, Dennis Miller, Neil Boortz and Laura Ingraham. All have two things in common with Joe Pyne, they're all intelligent, more importantly for entertainment value, they are all funny in their own way, from their own place.

I don't recall Joe Pyne, but I definitely listen to the current hosts you mention. I consider Limbaugh a true thought leader, and although I like Hannity, he seems to have few original thoughts in his head. Been catching Miller lately, and he does have a good sense of humor, but often gets caught up in making esoteric references that too few listeners are likely to grasp. I used to listen to Bruce Williams on TalkNet and really enjoyed him, too, for knowledge and wisdom on all-around topics. Given your listening list, I'm surprised you haven't weighed in on the Presidential Election thread. Seems MPower is the only one trying (sometimes sheepishly) to carry the politically conservative banner. Cheers. |

May not exactly be what you had in mind, but...
I grew up in NYC, listening to sports talk radio on WFAN. Had it on in car, the house. It was always part of the background noise. Then I got married, and in the interest of domestic tranquility, had to scale back. 8) Then I moved to western PA, fell out of the signal completely and went several years without it. Now, WFAN streams live over the internet. Can't tell you how happy that's made me. 8) I've been known to walk around with my laptop and a pair of earbuds yelling at Mike and the Mad Dog to give the callers a chance to speak. I can't stand listening to political talk radio on EITHER end of the spectrum. I have this stubborn appreciation for facts. Exaggeration and hyperbole are entertaining when you're talking about sports, but infuriating when applied to government. The recent comments by Bill Cunningham are a good example. Just my opinion - don't mean to knock anyone.

Nova,
Limbaugh literally paved the way for all that followed. Those I listen-to recognize the debt owed-to Limbaugh, who, is one of the greatest radio-broadcasters of all time. Limbaugh understands successful radio shows are personality-driven, constructs his show accordingly. IMO, Hannity is an unfunny yawn, ultimately, unlistenable. Miller's humor and esoteric references are the reason I listen, and, LOL. Savage pulls no punches, dissects culture and the political landscape without regard for his listeners sensitivities. Ingraham uses satire to ridicule popular culture icons. Air-America? Even less listenable than Hannity. Have heard-of, though never actually heard Bruce Williams. Commenting in political threads becomes an argument over how much Socialism is 'just right'. We are so screwed. Back to talk radio, one of my favorite bits are the Norm MacDonald appearances on Miller's show. MacDonald sounds slow, almost hebitudinous at times, but, a brilliant mind resides therein. He is one funny dude. Edge, I listened to Imus on WFAN/MSNBC. Is Imus still apologizing?

Long answer: Imus was canned from WFAN, as I'm sure you know. In fact, right after his comments, WFAN completely erased all mention of him from their website, even before MSNBC had made their "decision". He HAD been the biggest thing on the webpage and the brightest light on WFAN, then he was gone. It was AMAZING how quickly those spineless, politically correct weenies deserted him. In any case, Imus had never been part of the internet live stream on WFAN, (you can only get him on an actual radio signal) they just re-broadcast previously aired sports talk from 6 to 10am, so I didn't follow his show once I moved out to PA. I guess they never worked out the contractual issues to stream Imus live over the internet along with the rest of the station. When I lived in NY and drove in, I'd listen to him in the morning. I thought the show (the cast as a whole) was really smart and funny and I enjoyed the hearing from the high-profile callers. Oh well. Any O&A fans out there? Linger longer? FRRRRRRUNCUS??? If you're out there, happy birthday Little Jimmy, you mealy-mouthed zilch.

Probably the most intelligent statement ever uttered by right wing talk show gabber, religious hack and monkey boy cheerleader; Hugh Hewitt. |

Only NPR and news radio here. I used to listen to a lot of local talk shows when I was a teen and early 20s when I wanted to prove correct the old adage that opinions are like arseholes. Now in my 30s, I don't have the stomach for the name-calling that goes on in those shows, being a minority I get enough name-calling just going to the local store; thank goodness for noise-canceling earphones (and boxing lessons).
