Question Actual cost of accessories...

my car got delivered to the dealership yesterday and i have asked him to fit in some accessories...and also asked him to send me an email with all the costs breakdown..he sent me the following:

IPOD ADAPTOR $470 with Install

All Rubber Mats$96
Power Adaptor $8.79
Cargo Tray: $96
Gocery Gripper $92
Chrome Tips $94
Window Tint: $180
Alarm:$480.85
Head Rest Hanger: $42.65
Aluminum Pedals: $165.82

I was checking the accessories book with all the accessories costs and the rates that the dealer gave to me are slightly more..
Am i missing something...i checked if he included the taxes and still the rates are higher with the taxes included for the original rates...
Does the dealer charge installation fee for each accessory???

They must be because you can buy all of that stuff cheaper. I am still looking for a total parts mail order dealer for additional stuff but you can get the mats from www.bmwwheels.com for $65 (f/r). The chrome tips can be bought anywhere for around $60 for both. The Aluminum pedals "I think" are around $100 for everything (Kick plate, brake, gas, clutch if needed).

Some stuff isn't bad but he's getting you on others....

Accessories

There must be a lot of flexibility for dealers to charge differently for accessories. As part of my purchase, they gave me some accessories for free and a discount price / free installation of several others.

My 'discount' was actually getting the price shown in the accessories book -- which was about 10 percent less than their regular price as shown on the bill. But the installation truly was free, and it gave me a chance to meet and deal with all the folks in the service department.

I would quiz them on what they are charging for installation though. Based on some other threads here, the iPod seems reasonable; I paid $64 for the exhaust tips -- but how can they charge installation on floor mats?

I got a BMW sunscreen from EBay, saving 50 cents (wow!) from what I would have paid the dealer,(shipping & taxes are about the same) but it does pay to shop just so you know if he's giving you fair prices all the way around.

Yeah, like that grocery gripper. vamc.mc, are you sure you're not missing a decimal point in there somewhere?

Accessories for any of our seven brands are quoted directly out of the manufacturers books and the only time it is additional is when technicians labor is involved or if there is painting required. If it's an item not in our books,we have a slightly higher markup, but it always must be competitive to the marketplace, sometimes we can be higher on some items, but less on others. It's the smallest profit area of the overall picture.I think the largest comes from warranty work and then probably out of warranty work.
