BMW equips cars with free Real Time Traffic Information

So, can my 2006 330xi be retrofitted/upgraded with this?

It ought to be possible as this must be entirely software based.

The navigation system in the UK already has a form of traffic interface and dynamic re-routing.

I think Jspira confirmed it cannot be retrofitted. Although I would love it to be.

It requires an extra FM tuner (hardware) which I don't believe is in the earlier units.

FM Tuner? for traffic? Every car comes with FM tuner for radio stations.
Do you mean AM tuner so I can listen to 10-10 ?

The UK system works as described here:

http://www.tmcforum.com/en/about_tmc...hat_is_tmc.htm

I'm surprised that BMW bother to install different hardware for the US market, but I suppose that this may well be the case.

I don't know if the traffic information will be broadcast in the US in the same way either.

It has to tune to a different station than you're listening to for the traffic information (which is transmitted digitally). You need a separate tuner for that so you're not limited to listening to that station.

Sirius comes with dedicated traffic channels for major metropolitan areas. It's like the traffic segment we get in NYC radio every 10 minutes, but looped over and over (without commercials).

Does anyone know how this new system would work in day to day driving?

I have to think that for this system to work correctly, you need to enter the route into Navigation that you're taking all the time. Otherwise, it isn't going to be able to tell you if there's a traffic jam on your route (it wouldn't know where you were planning to go)

I think that TMC is basically the same in all countries (although the business model may be different). If it's been available in the UK for some time then it MIGHT be in earlier US cars. But often there will be different hardware in cars destined to different countries.

Apparently BMW was originally saying that Nav for the new E92 (and E90) for the US was going to be delayed because
of the addition of RTTI. (They did get it in and the delay didn't happen, however.) This would seem to indicate that US cars didn't have the hardware prior to the 07 model year.

Note that this is NOT Sirius but the TMC FM system.

It displays all incidents on the map even if there is not a route in. If there is a route it specially flags incidents on the route.

Search this forum for RTTI to find the Dealer Bulletin that describes it.
