Exclamation Michelin Runflat ZR rating?!!

I drive a 2008 335i sedan with sports pkg.
Got a nail in the rear tire and replacing both rears...went to the serivce dept and parts and service told me my michelin pilot sports are ZR rated - not legal here!
Ive been driving on these tires since day 1 and now I have 23k miles.
The car has been in the shop for maintance and never caught on!

What should BMW or the dealer do? Please help... I want all tires to be replaced to legal speed ratings in the Michelins!

Thanks!

Surely tyres with a *higher* speed rating are legal. Ones with a lower rating would be unwise, but you can't get a better tyre than a Z.

If not, get the BMW dealer to have you arrested I suppose.

+1000.

i dont get why having a high speed rating like ZR would make the tire illegal.

you might want to double check w/ that SA, and where he got his info.
A SA should not be throwing bad info like that to owners.

and ,might check w/ the experts at Tirerack.

Do you (or your service department) think FBI, CIA and local police are going to arrest you for having these illegal ZR-speed-rated tires on your car??

If you are seriously worried about getting arrested, you can get a new set of M-rated tires (maximum speed is 81 mph) at your favorite tire shop retailer. I won't tell any law enforcement that you have ZR speed-rated tires.

After you get a new set of tires, please post pictures of your Bimmer with M-rated...

what the hell is illegal about zr rated tires?

Z encompasses Y and W rated tires, the specific speed rating follows the load rating.

255-35zr18 88Y

Z specifies over 149mph. the Y designates 186mph as the speed.

all sport package tires are ZR rated so someone has no idea what they are talking about.

BMW is out of stock, why would they have to replace them for you?

you need to go to tire rack and buy two of them. end of story.

Not sure why the confusion or complication. Simply match the same brand and model of tire. If one store or dealer does not have them, order them from someone who does.

That SA has to be a complete f*ckin idiot to spew such nonsense. This actually made me laugh because it makes no sense whatsoever. I can see them saying it's not stock and we cannot replace that tire, but to say its illegal is BS. I would never take my car to that SA/ dealer again!

I believe ZR rating is 186mph.There is no such thing as an illegal speed rating.

not 100% correct.

When Z-speed rated tires were first introduced, they were thought to reflect the highest tire speed rating that would ever be required, in excess of 240 km/h or 149 mph. While Z-speed rated tires are capable of speeds in excess of 149 mph, how far above 149 mph was not identified. That ultimately caused the automotive industry to add W- and Y-speed ratings to identify the tires that meet the needs of new vehicles that have extremely high top-speed capabilities.
W 168 mph 270 km/h Exotic Sports Cars
Y 186 mph 300 km/h Exotic Sports Cars

While a Z-speed rating still often appears in the tire size designation of these tires, such as 225/50ZR16 91W, the Z in the size signifies a maximum speed capability in excess of 149 mph, 240 km/h; the W in the service description indicates the tire's 168 mph, 270 km/h maximum speed.
