iDrive very strange behaviour

A funny thing happened on the way home this evening...

The iDrive started to run extremely slowly when trying to use any controls or navigate through menus. It started with a delay of about 4-5 seconds between commands and then slowed right down to about 30 seconds.

I turned the engine off and took the key out at traffic lights, but when it restarted, was doing the same thing. It then just froze, showing the BMW logo screen for about a minute, then went completely dead (while I was driving along). It then re-started (so had obviously re-booted) and now seems to be ok.

Makes me wonder if this was a one off glitch or the start of something more serious.

Anyone had a similar experience?

Unfortunately idrive is also in recession and has seen a significant slowdown in recent weeks

It may be sometime before you see an upturn in its performance...

Mine grinds to a halt regularly. Don't press more than 1 button every few seconds - it gets confused.

I think BMW used the processor from a batch of ZX81's for the I drive.

Maybe they've moved onto commodore 64 units for the facelift?

Remember doing this in dixons -

10 print "penis"
20 goto 10

run

Don't know if the i-drive is up to that level of processing though?

Mine does this every now and again. If you are using a copied nav disc, then that can make it worse. Especially the dual layer ones.

It wasn't just me then. What was the command to make it scroll diagonally across the screen, I used to do that one all the time because I thought it set me above the herd.

sorry, off topic,

I think if you didn't put a ';' after the "offending text" it didn't carriage return and just wrapped round and round and down the screen.

I'm sure loads on here can tell us!

Happened for a second time yesterday. Just froze, went blank & rebooted. One more time and it's a visit to the dealers.

This morning I lost all 8 of the presets, a mixture of radio stations, phone No.s and sat nav destinations. Also drove to London and back with the 'traffic programme' switched on. Can't believe there were no announcements all day. Got one at 5.30 when I was 10 minutes from home!

Did you use the other key by any chance? Thought I'd lost all my settings once, but it was just the wrong key!

Went through my mind but the spare is tucked away safely so no chance of a mistake. All presets worked yesterday as I had used them.

Ah yes, the old Spectrum BASIC

10 PRINT "penis ";
20 GO TO 10

RUN

Remember the space after your "word" and remember the semi-colon.

And of course, try it out for real here:

Ok, ok. Nope, nothing to do with temp - car had been running for about 45 mins each time. No problems with things slowing down in the cold.
