Question Replacing the turbos?

Has anyone replaced the turbos themselves? I am interested in whether or not you will have to lift/drop the engine to get the turbos out. Input is appreciated, thanks

Dealer considers it an engine out procedure...but it's really just a lift of the rear. Looks like a major PITA to me.

Has anyone on here actually performed the procedure?

We are about to do so on the shop car and were planning on dropping the subframe and the motor. If someone has been able to get them out another way I am all ears.

As crazy as it sounds, it would be nice to see a DIY of it.

I got mine replaced

Went to the shop at the middle of the operation and they didn't drop the engine or subframe. But no info how they took them out

The ASR thread has a mention of raising the engine on the passenger side only a few inches off the mount and dropping some steering component. Turbos removed without disconnecting the transmission.

It can be done by removing the passengere side engine mount.

I have done it on a 535i and did it with the motor still in the car. I think I left the subframe connected for that one. Loosening the motor mounts and dropping the subframe will gain you alot of access though... But im pretty sure I just removed the motor mount and bracket on the pass. side. I've done several wastegate replacements on the 335i's and same thing although I left the turbos on the engine for the wastegate replacements.
