Help an ipod virgin...
Even though I've resisted buying an ipod for all these years I've imported my whole CD collection over to itunes. Anyway, I've just weakened & bought a 80gb Classic ipod off ebay (5th generation I think?!?) and need to know which leads are the best to get it playing in my car.
I've got the Professional Nav set-up (i-drive, screen, crap stereo) so presume I just use the AUX jack in the arm-rest. I've not got the USB (5FL?) thing and wont be going to the expense of fitting it. I understand that doing it 'on the cheap' means tracks won't be displayed on screen nor can I control it via the steering wheel; is that right. Will one lead pump the music through and charge or do I need two leads (one going to the cigarette lighter). Are there any compatibility issues or are the leads pretty much the same (another ebay job). I know this has been discussed before but selfishly wanted to know exactly for my situation (plus the other threads got a little complex & lost me; how old do I sound!!!). Cheers, Roger

The Kensington thing looks pretty good MOB; thanks.
If I was to go down the really basic route, to find my feet, there seems to be two types of cable, one which looks like a phono to phono (i.e. matching ends) the other has the long thin connector to the ipod with a phono at the other end. Do these esentially do the same job?? I told you I was a complete novice when it comes to all things ipod!!! See photos...

i don't think you can charge through the aux port so probably they are the same. get phono to phono if anything just in case you want to play another type of mp3 player.

The charger looks like this (see, I'm getting there...)
So, no difference between the other two leads then???

Get a Monster in car charger. A high quality product and recommended by Apple. Can be bought from t'internet and Apple site/stores. Fits the dock connector on the ipod and also has a phono socket to send audio to the AUX input of the car. You will get a cleaner sound out of the dock connector than through the headphone socket. As said the music needs to be controlled from the ipod. If you set up playlists on itunes this is no problem or just set the ipod on 'shuffle'.

The other lead sends an un-amplified signal from the Ipod into your car - a better method as the sound hasnt been tampered with by the Ipod. |

Good input guys. Hopefully it'll arrive in tomorrows post so get to have a play. It's already got 40gb of music & a few films on it to ditch all the crap and away we go...
