Front bumper paint chips - Black Sapphire
Hey - I have a question. Do those of you with Black Sapphire notice tons of paint chips on the front bumper? I've had my car 1 year and have put about 8,000 miles on it and my front bumper is loaded with chips. I want to know if this is a regular problem (I live in MA) on this color or if maybe my paint is defective on the bumper. I noticed that in one area the paint is very orange-peely, and have mentioned this to the dealer before. When I mentioned it to him they stated that I could get the bumper re-painted and now I am thinking it's a good idea. I further wonder if the bumper had been painted before I bought the car - I bought it CPO last March. Is this a typical BS problem?
Thanks!

You have a dark color paint and you live in an area, like myself, where we have to deal with tons of salt and sand on the roads during the winter months kicking up on the nose of our cars. Any car without protection, like a clear bra is going to get chipped. A dark color is going to show them much more. That's the reason along with others I'm personally done with dark colors.
As far as the orange peel, that is just the way BMW paint seems to look these days. Again, it is more noticeable on dark colors, at least to me.

All too common, even on the west coast.

I haven't had too much chipping, even driving it DD for 2 years in Cleveland. I make a conscious effort to keep a good distance in front of me and never follow semi-trucks or dump trucks. Why don't you take them up on the repaint?

The best thing you can do is touch-up the chips every so often and hope for the best OR do some touch-up and have a clear bra installed. If you have the front end repainted anyway and want to have a clear bra installed afterward then you'll have to wait atleast 30 days before having it installed ...... paint has to have time to properly cure.
I have jet black and the clear bra is the only way to go to prevent the chips etc. ... ![]() Last edited by ToadHollow; 03-26-2009 at 07:54 PM.. |

Have not really had a problem with this. I agree with the above post, keep your distance from other cars, especially trucks. I usually keep the car pretty well sealed with Jetseal 109 and wax every month so thinking that might help.

I agree. I am just saying that every little thing helps. Key is to keep your distance, obviously! Had my car for almost two years, 20,000 miles, 0 chips. I am sure i will get one tomorrow now!

Same problem here. I bought a CPO saphire metallic black and I noticed they repainted the bumper because they left a few pieces of tape on the corners. I've had it for 2,000 miles and the chips are very noticable. What I'm going to do in the near future is get the hood and bumper completely restored and then clear bra it.
