BMW AUC help

hey guys. new here.

ive been looking to buy a 320i msport, and found on at my local(ish) dealer.

its a 58 plate, sept 08 reg, and has done 9895 miles since then. i was told it was given to the service manager for use, and iirc, a demo.

its sparkling grapite/coral red/dark poplar with auto wipers, bluetooth, heated seats, 19" 225 style alloys and sun protection glass.

now. i got them to 5,400 part ex for my car, which is a bit more than book, and got the car itself to 24,400.

am i paying to much for this considering the mileage? i didnt think it was too bad at the time, but in hindsight, i feel i may have not got low enough. now, ive put the 1k deposit on the car. am i commited to buy this now? or can i still get out.

as for the AUC scheme. is the 3 years/unlimited mileage warranty passed on through this? i.e... will i have 2 years and 5 months worth of manufacturer warranty left? or is that written off and all i get is the 1 year through the AUC. the salesman did say i got the rest of the 3 years.. but.. thought id check.

as you see.. hindsight is full on 20/20 here....
cheers guys.

Are you talking about a coupe? I would assume so from your description.

A quick look at the AUC site suggests 2008 model 320i M-Sport coupes go from 23k up to about £28k for a specced up one, so you probably haven't done badly.

Personally I'd be wary of the 320i as it is known for engine problems and isn't the world's fastest car - you'll soon wish you'd bought a six-cylinder and will be grumbling at only getting mpg in the low 30's when you were expecting high 30's.

Have you tried the 320d? It will be better on fuel and faster, though admittedly more expensive to buy so not really any cheaper overall unless you do a lot of miles.

That said, the 3-series, even in 320i guise, is a stunning car and the colour combo you have should look pretty damn good.

In terms of your deposit, you probably are committed now that you've paid it -unless you find something wrong or mis-sold about the car. However, most dealers won't get too stroppy if you decide you prefer a different car from their stock.

My first question is "is this THE car that you want?" By that is it the right colour/interior and spec you were after? Also is it a saloon, touring, coupe, convertible and manual or auto?

I think it looks a bit high for a coupe that mileage, age and spec (that is what I compared it to on AUC website) especially if they are giving book + for trade-in but there are probably better placed people than me to comment on that.

Looks like it is £19k for you to change to that car so is that more or less than you wanted to spend? Are you doing finance through them as that is where a fair bit of their money is made.

If you are having second thoughts my guess is that the answers to some of the above is making you think again. Personally if it is not exactly what you want I would say stop to the dealer and immediately depending on what you have signed if anything. If the deposit is refundable you have nothing to lose IMHO although it may not be. If you have signed there is probably a cooling off period but read exactly what it says and if you have real doubts you will have to tackle the dealer again and use comparisons with elsewhere if you need to.

BTW have you looked beyond local? It is worth it to get the car you want.

My understanding is that you do get the full warranty transferred.

its a coupe.the spec is what i want. i would have liked the i drive, but theres not many about in the smaller engine cars, and the ones that are about, they want a lot more money.

as for the 320i, i know its not overly fast, but being relatively young, i cant afford to insure a 325.

its more the price and mileage im more concerned about now. my father seems to think i paid a lot for it.

i think i will give the dealer a ring tomorrow, although i feel they wont care about the price. i just hope the deposit is refundable. stupid me for not checking i spose....

i looked further than local. a lot of the ones i liked were sold when i enquired further.

EDIT: what are the main problems with the 320i engine? ive been reading about people having weird MPG. many other problems?

after reading about the wheels cracking i might ask them to check the wheels first too.

How much are you saving from new?

Getting more than book for your current car is good in this market. If they had offered you £1000 less for yours but the new car was £1000 less would you have been happier?

I think its perfectly normal to be having reservations about spending that sort of money!

Garage List
If you price your spec. on Broadspeed.com the price is about £27,500 although this is based upon the offer of "buy an SE and get a free upgrade to m-sport" - BMW do appear to be doing this still. Without this special offer the m-sport price would be about £29,500 and they will argue that when this car was ordered from BMW the free m-sport upgrade wasn't available.

I paid a £500 deposit when I ordered my new car and it was not refundable but in my case they actually ordered a car from BMW therefore were incurring expense. In your case, the car is already sitting there and their deposit is twice my dealer's so I don't think they should have any right to keep hold of it - but did you sign anything acknowledging that it was non returnable?

In either case, if you changed your choice but were still buying from the same dealer, I don't think there would be any problem with your deposit.

As far as I can see, their asking price is within the ball park of the figures on the BMW AUC site but, without exception, they all had less miles than your car - the worst was 6,500 miles and the typical mileage was a couple of thousand so I think their price is a bit high but if you got some more cash off their asking price and you got more in part exchange than you expected, it may be that whilst your overall cost isn't the bargain of the year, you haven't been stung either - and if it is the exact spec you want....

If you went to the dealers premises and signed the contract for the standard used vehicle order, trhen the deposit is non refundable and the price is now non negoitiable. The dealer doea not even have to swap your deposit to another car.

You have signed a contract to purchase, you have 14 days to complete the purchase after being notified it is ready see clause 5c on the back. It tells you on the bit where you sign that you are signing a contract and to read clauses 5, 7 and 13. Any concessions the dealer makes after signing the contract is down to goodwill.

The lesson is to read the small print before you sign, do not ask people if you got a good deal after you have signed because somebody will say you could have done better.

This is from Glasses Guide. You're paying slightly more than book retail value, but you've said that they have offered you above book for your car, so this might just cancel out?

You'll get the balance of the 3 year manufacturers warranty as well as an assurance that their will be no maintenance costs for (I think) the first 3 months or so.
