Fixing Motorway Surfaces?
Does anyone know who holds the responsibility of repairing Motorway surfaces? Council that the motorway runs through, central gov…?
I use the M4 most days and have noticed that some areas have just been re-tarmac’d that were perfectly smooth, with no faults or potholes. On the other hand, another section just a few miles away is literally falling apart with loads of potholes that make you think you just drove over a landmine when you hit them! There seems to be no logic as to what part of the motorway gets fixed over another. Any ideas?

Normally if it's looked after a 3rd party company (i.e. M8 is looked after by BEAR Scotland) then the is signs on the motor-way. Easiest way to way to find out is check with the highways agency...

http://www.highways.gov.uk/roads/1500.aspx They have some roads where the responsibility to maintain has been directly subcontracted in a 'design, build and operate' agreement, but this does not include the M4. They will also have a number of areas where the road is under a 'maintenance period', which means that it is supposed to be maintained by the people who last worked on the road at their own expense. |
