Unhappy Anyone in Aus have STEERING LOCK problems?

I have a symbol on my dash of a steering wheel with a lock (with a number '1' in it). It has happen a few times in the last 2-3 weeks but it has gotten really bad where I have to jiggle the steering wheel and play with the door lock/ unlock before I can actually get the car started.

I read on this forum that many people with particularly the 2006 E90's having this issue. It is covered under warranty and may involve a software/ steering column mechanism upgrade/ replacement.

This is just an inconvenience to me as to book it in to BMW and get a courtesy car, im looking at least 2 weeks wait. Ive decided to book it in tmrw and just get a taxi to and from work.

I just wanted to ask if anyone in AUS has had the same problem as it seems to be a common issue to arise with overseas owners & their cars?

Problems so far:

1. Airbag light comes on and stays on - BMW had to reset
2. Fan motor got very noisy - something dislodged in the airvent and was vibrating to buggery - again BMW fixed under warranty
3. Steering Lock light stays on red - car cant even start

Bloody hell, a 15month old car with all these little factory / warranty problems.... damn. Just bad luck! But I guess i cant really complain, at least it isnt anything major that has gone wrong. Just little annoying things thats all!

Hopefully a software update will solve your problem. I'm not aware of this being a problomatic issue. nobody likes the inconvienience but since this issue potentialy can leave you stranded, the dealer should attend to it quickly and give you a loaner as a matter of priority.

Good luck

I did have steering wheel lock warning back in June 2007, after the car came out from bodyshop from minor accident. The car was delivered March2007. I got an red warning with steering lock with number 1 in it.

I had no problem starting the car, although the manual mentioned that I might have problem starting the engine. Took the car to dealer and they reset the software. Since then (finger crossed) the problem never reoccured.

Car got fixed yesterday, took 6 hours but the boys got it done. They had to replace my whole steering column. Makes me wonder what else could go wrong with a 15month old car!!!!

Had the same problem on my E90 325. Got the whole kit and carboodle done; software upgrade and steering column locking mechanism replaced. Was under warranty so no charge but I asked how much and service advisor said about $1500 otherwise!!!

Next problem on my E90 325 was squeaky brakes. Got all brake pads, sensors replaced etc. Set me back about $1.5k!
