those who upgraded from logic7?
what do you do when upgrading the logic7. I'm probably going with the cleansweep or 3sixty... do you just ditch the center channel? if so, how different is the sound w/o it? I'm trying to plan my stereo and looking for ideas. thanks

First, let me start out by saying that I think the Logic 7 sound from 250 Hz and up sounds great for a stock sound system. It’s just that lower end that needs a little help. A little more power to the speakers under the seats, and a sealed sub with some good power to drive it is the answer.
So, first I tapped into the sub wires coming out of the stock amp, split the wires into 2 separate inputs (Sub & speakers under seats) and put them into an Audio Control LC6i line converter. This unit also has a sub gain control, which I mounted in the center console. From there I went into one of the new digital amps from JL, an HD 600/4. I must say that these new HD amps from JL are very impressive! This amp that I picked will send 150W to the speakers under the seats, and 300W to the Sub. Speaking of the sub, I choose a JL 10W3v3, which I find to be very musical sounding in a small sealed enclosure. Next was building the sealed enclosure (about .625 cu ft ) for the Sub … I choose a rear firing box and I decided to mount the equipment on the front of the box, so you can get at the stuff when you put the seats down. Next was tuning the gains and x-over points between the subs and under seat speakers. I found bring the x-over point up a bit on the speakers under the seats made the transition between the Sub and seat speakers work best, and I could drive the seat speakers a little more with a higher x-over point. Now the results ….. all I can say is ‘HOLY F’n CRAP!!’ This system sounds incredible!!! I wasn’t sure if I should add more power or replace the other drivers with Morel, or Dynaudio, or just keep them stock. Well boys and girls, no need for changing out all the drivers … just boost the low end of your system and you will be jumping for joy!! |

I think adding more bass would satisfy most.
If you're unsure about how far you want to take it, try it in stages. Start with an Audio Control LC6i, an amp & sub. Then maybe add more power to the fronts. Then replace the fronts, add an EQ, digital x-over........ |

The E90 speaker positions are great - with good front speakers, the center channel is a waste, and you can't play any multi-channel content other than straight 2-channel stereo anyway.
The crossover point may be usable depending on the upgrade you want. Many prefer a warmer, less brittle sound in the highs. With a better tweeter - think Morel or DLS or Hertz, or some soft dome playing low - you get an elevated image and clearer vocals. I've done E90 upgrades where I've installed a 4-channel amp running in 3-channel mode, and added a 10" sub in the trunk and new F door speakers, and left the R door speakers and the underseat woofers playing off of the factory amp. Sounded great. If you use a Zapco DC amp and 2 BTL adapters, you don't need any other interface. You will need some good tuning with an RTA hooked up, though. |

Thanks for all the responses. i'm still not sure what I want to do. That's a very cool device Technic... I like the idea of the direct interface... couldn't find any pricing information though. How much does this thing cost?

The device Technic is discussing is a great idea... and I encouraged Mobridge to bring it to market in some conversations my old company had with them. Based on their other products, it ought to be falling out of a boat for them to make. They *might* be doing Mercedes first... but I wouldn't wait forever.

It looks like they are having some technical issues as this month's introduction was postponed indefinitely. |

We had problems getting their Benz and BMW iPod interfaces working a couple of years ago. This sort of device requires a great deal of access to different trim levels and different country-spec cars. Of course, the company I worked for had its own problems with vehicle-specific firmware validation. Not throwing rocks, just acknowledging the challenges. MoBridge has another challenge - the bottom has fallen out of the 12V aftermarket with the current economic crisis - as most purchases seem tied to both the use of consumer credit, and the purchase of a vehicle (two things you don't want to have been linked to the past 6 months). They could be having a challenge in finding sufficient worldwide distribution. On the other hand, it might work flawlessly and the delay is caused by them finalizing their deal to private label it for Rockford or JL or someone - fingers crossed. (Alpine is out - their OE position effectively prevents them from offering anything like this in the aftermarket). |
