What is a LSD

Limited slip differential I'm aware of, but what exactly is the advantage of installing one. Floyd recently got one done...just wanted to know what they actually are

Still learning...

Click on the Quaife LSD link on any of E92Fan's posts. SoYank shows a picture of the LSD but iirc Tony goes into a bit more detail. You could also google it and get an over techy definition but in short words, it cuts down wheel spin particularly on bends and therefore the DSC cuts in less often and you go faster.

Lol! So it's cheating...making yourself to appear better than you really are.

No. That would be DSC which flatters the driver's skill by pulling him out of a situation his poor driving got him into.

Like ABS, for people who can't cadence brake.

if you did a burn out in your car, only 1 wheel in the rear will be spinning, but with LSD both the rears will be spinning up.

Cheating at what? I wouldn't say it was cheating. It's something the car should have come off the assembly line with already installed, M3 be damned. It makes the car function better and safer on both wet and dry roadway especially this time of year where the potholes are breaking open and spewing their gravelly guts all over the road. I got the LSD mostly to keep the DTC/DSC from interferring at the wrong time as it is wont to do on occasion. To me it's more of a safety mod as a performance one although I'm sure I'd have an uphill battle convincing a British insurance company to that opinion. As I see it if I pull out onto a roadway, even with much room to spare in front of another vehicle, I certainly don't want the brakes to come on or the engine to power down right at the time when what I want is just the opposite.

It also makes the car so much more fun to drive. I'm thoroughly thrilled with it so far and I've not even come close to really putting it through its paces.

I was amazed that the BM didn't have this as standard! My RX8 (£23.500 new) had one...which is why I could see more high powered cars off the corners without breaking a sweat! There is NO excuse for BMW not putting a LSD as factory fit ...and decent bloody tyres on the car! Went on the Dales route yesterday to 'try it out' and on those roads progress is severely compromised by the crap tyres ....and the slow drivers! EDIT and another thing...'cruising' some nice sweeping roads at a reasonable pace today and the damned DSC cut in right as I wanted the power to overtake a crappy French thing that had been determined to hold me up at a very reasonable XX miles an hour coming back from Shropshire. Put me in a car with an LSD and decent tyres......... Anyway. Was still a damned good drive and the Frenchman was toast!

Having said that, the DSC is a wonderful aid to safety for less than capable drivers...of which there are many!

True The LSD is a must and should be fitted as standard! .

My RX only put out a 'meagre' 230 bhp, but it was so well engineered and when you kept it on the boil at 6-7000 rpm with another 2000 to go!!! I saw the back of ....or the front of many a more poweful car. But it all comes down to your driving skill and how big your balls are at the time! And how stupid you are as well.... Tried to overtake a 350z today at a very quick speed and the tosser decided to accelerate just as we came to a double white line blind corner with a van coming down towards us. Needless to say, I backed off, but he behaved like a total tosser just to prove a point.
No doubt he'll tell the pub how he saw of another BMW!

Great devices they are too, had one on a 200SX I had many years ago but I dont think there is anyone on this forum who would overall be 'safer' with one (and cadence braking? you're having a laugh).

E-mail Kevin (kevin.bird@birdsauto.com ) with your VIN and he can get the details.

Go to http://www.birdsauto.com/. In the upper right, click QUAIFE LSD. Click the top CLICK HERE. Scroll down on the left and click on 3 Series (E90). Scroll through the right until you get to the Rear Axle portion and then scroll some more until you find your model and transmission. For my car the conversion kit was for a bolted crown gear and the exchange was for the welded crown gear; I had the welded one. If all else fails, the phone number is on the web page.
