Has anyone added speed camera POI to Hard Drive?

How that the hard drive Nav Systems have been out for 4 months, I wonder if anyone has succeeded in added the Speed camera POIs onto the hard drive, and if so, what is the secret please?

If you mean buy a disc with them on, I have, but they only come up as icons and don't warn you when you're getting close.

buy ???

The HD version may prove a little bit tricky. Until someone manages to read the file structure and see where the POIs are stored. Should be possible, but would require some way to overwrite and add files to the HD - access I am sure you won't have directly (BMW will for updates but probably using there own software, and could overwrite them again - bit like an engine re-map).

But if it is a standard file-system HD ... as long as you can reach the cable you should be able to plug it into your laptop and take a mirror copy.

Depends where BMW have actually mounted it.

This gives some background on the DVD version, which I previously carried out once or twice : http://www.bmwnavaddpoi.co.uk/ Mostly just simple ASCII HTML based files.

No need to have bought one. Sergei (with input from his aquantainces) created the latest one for download. There are threads about it on here.

If it wasn't from Sergei, whoever you bought it from was just cashing in.

You're assuming we all have DVD burners and are familiar with computers.

If I could find the hard drive, I would image it and if it really is as simple as adding POI files to it, that wouldn't be that hard.

But, it the hard drive powered up when the car is off? Would removing it and reinserting it cause a problem?

I have a feeling that getting the POI onto teh HD isn't that easy. .

As Dave has said, a hard drive image would need to be created onto external media, before the file system could be 'interrogated'.
It certainly wouldn't be the easiest of tasks to carry out, but, there again, not impossible.

If the POI lookup tables can be created using a Perl script, as with the DVD-based data, the html files can all be read without problem, & the new tables can be written back to the drive intact, then it'll be relatively easy to do.

The hard drive is situated in the central column beneath the CD/DVD drive. I believe it is a 2.5" HDD. I know it is 80 GB. You'd think if they were going to put in a hard drive they'd at least put in something substantial.

I had the camera POIs on my previous E90 Nav (2009-1 sergei DVD), they were pretty rubbish and well out of date. They just clutter up the map view and you're likely to crash / miss a camera by trying to locate them on the screen. It shows cameras as a single icon, not telling you if its even on your side of the road, so thats 50% that are unecessary to start with. Also no speed limit info is given.

Waste of time IMO.

Get yourself a road angel or similar.

The new Road angel Pro is pretty cool as it gives 'live' van locations sent from other users via instant updates on the GSM network, although i'm sticking with my PLUS model as it is simple and spot on accurate and looks good on the dash. Fits under the armrest too for storage. (rechargeable too, so no wires on the dash, magpad-mounted between the speedo and nav humps it doesn't sucker on the screen either)

You get a proper GPS speed reading too so you can keep to the REAL limits with confidence.

Thanks for comments DB. My BMW dealer told me that you cannot just remove the hard drive and replace it; the car has to be reprogrammed if it is removed.

Anyway, I poped into the Ideal Home Exhibition last week and the Novus Alpha was being sold for £120 with lifetime updates.

http://www.novusalpha.com/

I like the GPS speed reading, so I think I will use that.

Oh and I got some bad news, I kerbed one of my alloys despite being careful. I think I will file down the damage, then emery board it and repaint with silver. Very annoying .

Watch the road, not the GPS.

Sorry to hear 'bought the wheel. Good luck with the repair. Take pictures of the process, too.
