Custom Sub Box Install

Howit fellow E90/E92's

So the Long Easter Weekend was more than enough time to finally build the Sub Woofer enclosure I have planned for SO long! The Enclosure is for a Pioneer 12" 800W SVC (the original before the gray products started rolling in)

First off, I built up the rough shape with Pine boards, this was a pain in the arse as the wheels arch is a complex shape of curves.

After I had ensured that I had the right shape and a tight fit, I started with the fiber glass around the shape. About 4 - 5 layers gave the right shape and hardness I wanted for the box.

Then I made sure that all wiring was still good on the amp I installed bout 4 months ago, also put in a remote on/off switch for when the in-laws are in the car.

Decided to carpet the entire box for the more stealth look, got the carpet at HI-FI Corp and so, the final product looks something like this.

And what does it sound like I hear you asking. Awesome!! It bangs for sure!! I played around with the crossover for a while to get the right integration point and sounds sweet now. After driving around with it for half a day, decided to drop the gain a bit as the base was drowning out the treble, but a couple of settings on the gain, combined with pushing the treble up has left me with a much rounder sound and fuller sound spectrum.

hav you thought about using supa wood?

Because I was going to fiberglass, I used any available wood in my garage just to get the basic form to fiberglass around. The glaas fiber gives the final strength and form, whilst the pine is soft enough to easily cut and sand.

still can't figure, how did you connect the amplifier to the standard sound system?

You use a Line out Converter (LOC) that converts the signal going to the speaker wires into a 5 volt signal that can enter the amp at RCA level. No cutting of wires, just purely an add-on. The sound is so much fuller now, brilliant!

have you got a picture of the cable?

basically you connected this wire to a speaker and then on the other end there is RCA's that connect to the amp

how does the on/off signal work?

sorry.. don't know much about this.

I have the remote connected to the CD changer cable cluster's remote-on and I just added an optional on/off switch for when I dont want all that bass (like when the in-laws are in the car!)
If you dont know that much about sound, rather take the car to a sound shop to help you install! You can buy all the component and have them install to save those precious Rands!
