Why make it bigger if they want to compete with 3 series C class etc.

I don't get why VW wants the Passat to compete with the 3 series/C class anyway, this will just cannibalize their own A4 sales. They could end up with the same situation that plagued domestic manufacturers where they have a ton of nearly identical cars badge engineered and competing against each other...

A4 or Passat ...well money goes in the same pocket I guess. When I bought my A4 a couple years ago I didn't consider the Passat because I couldn't get 4-motion with the 1.8T. VAG will always do stupid things like that. Different clientele I guess. The B6 passat has the crappy Haldex-based AWD..so I won't consider it as well. Vw is forcing DSG down our throat...R32-Passat R36- Passat 3.6 4-motion. In my case the A4 seems to be a better option since it comes in manual and has a real Quattro(Torsen).
The passat will compete against the 3 series in price but it will an other boring FWD bloated sedan. The passat used to be sporty back in the 90's(remeber the vr6 and syncro versions). The B3(90-94) as an unreliable ride but it was fun to drive.
