Lots of Clay and Meguiars NXT wax

Spent most of the day Sunday washing, claying and waxing. I used almost a whole bar of clay. Here are some pics.

Looks good. You might have used a little bit too much clay though.

The bottom half of the car had a lot of dirt and tar on it. I probably should have used a bug/tar cleaner first and then clay.

You have a good amount of marring in this pic

on the left bottom part showing the bumper in sun. No biggie, but you should watch out as excessive use of clay, although fine grade, will cause marring...Even with a good lubrication.

Is that because of the way the sun is reflecting off of it?

Well what i mean is that you have marring (light light scratches, normally only seen in certain angles). Its no biggie, I mean, 90% of cars are swirled up, so a little marring on your ride isnt a big deal. It still looks great.

Clay can cause marring, bad wash techinique can cause it, coarse towels can cause it, ect...

I used The Clay Magic clay and lube. Works really well.

I had never even heard of claying a car before I found this forum. How hard is it to do? Looks like the results are worth it.

It's not hard, it just takes freakin' FOREVER. If you want to do your whole car yourself, more power to you. Since you're in Maryland, though, you may want to PM shimshimhada about his DC Metro area Zaino detailing service
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=24773

You can see what a great job he did with my car on this page:
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...t=24773&page=7

He washed, clayed, and sealed with Zaino. It took him about 5 hours. If I were doing it myself, it would have taken me more like 7 hours, and I would not have done as good a job. My car is incredibly smooth, shiny, and swirl free right now. Now I just need to keep it up with a regular wash each week.

Claying should take 25 minutes maximum, and thats with a lot of contaminants. Taking longer leads me to beleive that not enough lubricant is meing used or excessive rubby of the clay against the finish is happening. Some paints are harder than others and some show marring easier, but my finding is that even with fine grade claying, you will get some sort of marring. So for me, I try to make 2-3 swipes of the clay bar over the surface. If the clay is gliding right over the paint with no resistance, I feel its sufficient enough to go to the next panel.

I totally agree, it is really not a lot of work to "clay" your car. I have done 5 cars in the last 2 months now (3 of the family, a friend's and the neighbour's) and it should not take more than an hour. I usually wash the car properly, rinse the car with clean water, then use little bit of fresh soapy water as lubricant when claying, then rinse the car again before I wash the car again (in total probably 2 hours, before further treatment starts).
You obviously do not do this every weekend, but think 2-3 times per year with the change of season should do the trick!

I used it once but found that it was harder to take off than the regular Meguiars detailer and it seemed to leave a cloudy appearance.

I'll have to try it again.
