tyre wear?

hi, my 330d se has the 19" star spoke 230 style wheels. Ive done 17k miles & the osf tyre (RFT) has almost worn through on the outside edge (about 40mm wide strip).
my car runs straight, does not pull to either side & the steering wheel is straight. Ive had it from new & not hit any major pot holes.
What would cause this excess premature wear on the tyre? The rest of the tread on all 4 tyres is still very good.

I would have a proper 4 wheel alignment check carried out - it is normally the NSF tyre that wears first on the outside edge - due to roundabout cornering forces.

This kind of outside edge on the front tyres and inside edge wear on the rear is inherent to most current 3 series. If you are running Bridgestones RFT's then even more so on the front as the tread depth on the outer 40-50mm is not as deep as the remaining tread depth of the tyre.

Under-inflation can have an effect on this - I was very slack checking my pressures and noticed inside wear at about 18k (dealer told me the rears needed changing at my 1st service).

I was also advised to run 0.2 bar over the BMW recommended, and checked this every week. I managed another 6k out of the tyres with no further degredation of the insides, but the rest of the tyre was wearing normally.

Have now switched to a full set of non-runflats for about the same price as two RF rears.

full set of 19" bridgestones RFT's & 4 wheel alignment £990 all in at my local tyre centre, how does this price sound?

They have the proper alignment kit where they check the height etc & use weights if ness when doing the alignment & are happy for me to watch so im confident they are ok.

If you need all 4 tyres replaced then definitely have a look at ditching the RFT's. Now's the time! I just changed my 19" Bridgestones RFT's to 4 new Michelin PS2's non-runflats. (235/35/R19 - 265/30/R19)

The car is completely transformed and has tons more grip. This is even compared to when the Bridgestones were new. No more losing power when you put your foot down and hit a minor bump. The PS2's are much quieter and actually grip in the wet. The Bridgestone are by far the worst tyre I have ever had on any of my cars.

Do it!... get rid of the RFTs and you'll never look back! I'm still kicking myself for not doing it sooner!

Price for 4x Michelin PS2s fitted £914 + 4-wheel alignment £87.
For the alignment I would definitely recommend finding a place that uses Hunter machines and then get your 5% discount on the alignment off http://alignmycar.co.uk/

+1 - I put a full set of Vredestein Ultrac Sessantas on mine a couple of weeks ago (same size) for £650. It's transformed the ride, way more grip and so much more comfortable.
The Bridgestone's are pretty bad under about 7 degrees, so I'm interested to see what the Vred's are like in cooler conditions

thanks for all your replies guys, ive listened & took your advice, ive ditched the RFTs & had 4x Goodyears fitted ,gone up a size to 235/35/R19 - 265/30/R19 . cost all in with 4WA (which was way out on the rear & osf wheels) £740 .
Will report back on how it rides after weekend when ive got back from Yarmouth

I had exactly the same wear patttern as you - osf almost bald on the outside edge, annoyingly shortening the tyre life as the rest of the tread was at least 4mm!
