BMW Performance Calipers - Disassembly??
Hi Guys,
Need some help.... Does anyone have the assembly/disassembly instructions for the Front BMW Performance brake calipers (same as 135i style) - specifically the torque wrench settings for the mounting bolts (and pad guide pins if necc)? I'm getting a lot of brake dust on the OSF wheel and just occasionally a really slight feeling of judder. Having rotated the wheel by hand it feels like the pads are binding on the disk and there are signs of a pad imprint, so I want to strip it, have a look, clean up pads/disk, copaslip back of pads etc (will do the other side as well for good measure). Looks a pretty simple job, two main mounting bolts, pad guide pins, retaining spring etc but I don't want to start it without the torque wrench settings. All help gratefully received Mark PS: Can you buy/access the official workshop manual for these cars yet??

That's great, although reading down the thread it sounds like the OP removed the wrong bolts (the 10mm Allen bolts and not the M12 x 1.5 main mounting bolts). They mention in the thread that the M12 x 1.5 bolts should be renewed: I wonder how many actually are - guess I need to check with my local dealer to see if they are a stock item. I better eat some spinach as well - ready to torque those main bolts up - 110Nm

To be honest I can't remember ever renewing the caliper bolts on any other car but was just trying to stick with BMW recommended procedure. Looks like I'll be using the original bolts again.

110Nm is way too much!!!! It's only a M12x1.5 bolt - torque it up to about 80Nm only. If you go as far as 110Nm you run the very real risk of stretching the bolt or even worse, tearing the thread off!!!

Thanks for the head-up - by instinct and being 'old school' I would normally have guessed at 60lbft (80Nm) for these bolts but the US 1-addict post mentioned 110Nm which lead me in that direction. I certainly don't need the aggro of a stripped thread!! Thanks for the PM - much obliged

Checked the torque, BMW advises 110 Nm. Wheel bolts are also 12 x 1.5. They should be a 120 Nm. Never had problems with this much torque on these bolts.

The pre-set BMW wheel wrench is set at 130nm, which isn't too tight for wheel bolts when you actually pull it till it clicks.
When using a normal wrench you'd do wheels up to 200nm easily. OP - you don't need the disassembly instructions for the calipers, just how to get them of the mounts, a fairly simple task. The pad pins are usually just drop-out and held in with R-clips. |

Just because the same size bolt is used, doesn't mean that the strength ratings of each bolt will be the same. A wheel bolt is not the same thing that is used to mount a caliper
