Correct seating posture

Can anyone link me to any good articles on how to sit properly?

Thanks.

I've seen that before in some of my ACNA driving school documentation. Maybe S4to335 has a soft copy of it. That or, next time you're at Buttonwillow or Infineon, browse through the books they have there.

i forget where i read it (i think it was in 'going faster') and other random artciles.. but this is what i try to go by anyway...

- seat as high as possible (with a few inches between helmet and roof), seatback close to 90 degrees
- torso should be firmly against the seatback, harness/seatbelt as tight as possible
- with shoulders in natural position against the seatback if you stretch your arm the steering wheel should be at your wrist, and you should be able to reach the top and bottom of the wheel without having to lift your back from the seat
- should be able to press pedals fully without locking knees
- center of steering column should be point at your collarbone

Sucks being tall...as high as possible for me means as low as possible for the seat...if I want to fit in with my helmet!

Same here, but it doesn't suck. Just think of it as lowering your CoG

I struggled with the seating position a little this last weekend for my first driving school event at Auto Club Speedway. I'm only 6 feet tall, but have really long legs. I'm still looking for that balance between the steering wheel being close enough, knees low enough below the steering wheel/column to shift, not having my legs too far stretched out to hit the pedals and being able to fit the helmet under the headliner. The telescoping steering wheel is the only way I'm able to make it work.

we are about the same height and for me it isn't really that optimal either. My head is pretty close to the headliner and i have to shift my head over a little bit into the sunroof area to get that little bit of clearance. i wish the car had a no sunroof option. i have manual sport seats in my 328 so that gives me a little bit more headroom compared to having power seats. if anything you may have to recline the seat a bit more and then telescope the steering towards you

Yeah the wheel is all the way out. I had to lean the seat back a little to get the right clearance for my knees and I think that is what spurred the 2 comments I got from instructors regarding improper seat position. I don't like having the lower portion of the seat too parallel with the floor because I feel like I'm falling out of it. I'll have to keep playing with it until I get it right.

Excellent write-up. Right along the lines of what several past instructor/racers have directed me to do.

Open the sunroof slide

Here is an article from the BMW Magazine.

Go to Vol. 1 from 2008. Pages 40-41

You may need to tweak a bit for the track but it gives you a baseline.

I'm a member over there thanks to a friend, so I'm there quite often. Spent last weekend there, may be there this Friday. I try to get over there as often as possible!

I do! I'm a tall guy! Last time I had the sunroof open and I managed to get most of the day in before they asked me why I had it open! I just ended up putting my seat all the way down which is a feeling I'm getting used to.

Now that I'm really getting into it, I'll probably convert my e36 over to a dedicated track car. It's only a 325, but with a little bit of suspension work I'd imagine it will still be pretty fun.

Oh and, unless I'm doing something wrong, I didn't see the article in the '08 Vol. 3. Speaking of which, why aren't I getting the BMW magazine in the mail anymore?!

Oops, try Vol. 1.

And I no longer receive the Mag. Cost cutting by BMW maybe.

You have to "renew" the free subscription on a regular basis.
