I was on track this weekend with Johannes van Overbeek..

He friggin hauls in a Porsche Cup car...he ran in the C and D group (D group mostly being just race cars). I was doing what I thought were decent laps for me..but he passed me with those sequential shifters like I was a tortoise...sheesh. I dont think he is driving at 24 hrs of le mans this year..bummer. He would probably already be there if he was.

He was trying to do under 2:00 minutes at Thunderhill with T5 as usual..not with the bypass.

I totally respect that guys driving skilz.

This is a pic of the guy:

And the car he normally races in:

I didn't know you got excited about that kinda thing. Different cars obviously. But, what's the skill/speed difference between a Steve and a Johannes? When he's zipping around, do you see a fast car? Or, do you see a fast car driven fast?

Last question, is it possible for you to ever be as good as that guy?

His entry speeds into corners are way higher than mine. It is a fast car..driven by a skilled driver. There are all kinds of mixtures on track...fast cars w/slow drivers..slow cars w/fast drivers, slow cars w/slow drivers..and of course Johannes types...fast cars w/fast drivers. If you look a the line they take..its very much like ours....it just his car grips..and his cajones are huge. Ballz to the wall..ballz to the wall.

that's awesome. It is always a treat to see fast cars maxed out by fast drivers.

Hate to one-up ya, but I once drove around on an autocross course with Pierre Kleinubing as my passenger the year after he won the Speed World Challenge championship.

Highlight of my day was when he commented to the other passenger, who didn't think I was driving fast enough: "Oh believe me, he's pushing the car pretty close to its limits."

Other brushes:

My friends and I used to love going to K1 Karting in Irvine, CA. One time we were outside talking about our lines and times and acting like general idiots trying to one-up each other, when none other than BORIS SAID pulled up in his pick-up truck, got out and walked right past us and said "how are you guys doing?" and walked in. Needless to say we were all speechless as he walked by (Boris, if you've never met him, is actually quite physically intimidating at about 6'4, and 6'5 if you count the hair).

Once, at Laguna Seca to spectate at a Grand Am race, I walked right past Bill Auberlen and actually had the balls to shout "Hey Bill! How was the race?" What ensued was about 20 minutes of walking with him and listening to him digest the race and tell the story about his dicing with the Mustang for 1st place. That and meeting his wife. (if you know what I mean). Dude treated me like he knew me for years. Had the same experience with Joey Hand at Cal Speedway back when it was called Cal Speedway and Joey was driving for Tom Milner Sr.

Something about them BMW professional race car drivers. But no, I've never shared a track with them.

the cup car has a few things specific to being a full-blown race car, such as a sequential transmission, brake bias adjuster, stripped interior, a full cage (as opposed to a roll bar), and a more hardcore suspension. I'm not sure you can even buy one unless you represent a professional racing team. There may be other differences in the oiling and cooling systems as well. I read an article about the cup a while back, but I can't seem to find it right now.

Isn't he supposed to be at Le Mans? Or is only their sister car going to be there?

Pretty cool!

Somewhat related observation:
I'm curious though, as it seems that many clubs have different classification systems. For the local BMW CCA club, D group is beginners and A group is Expert/Race Car types. Sounds like your D group is my local club's A group. So when I say I was running in D group last month, I know I'm running Novice, but some of you will see it as the top group? Very confusing....

yes and no. This being the internet, I assume 2 things with most new-to-me forum users. First, that they mis-typed/mis-spoke and really meant whatever letter/color/number/animal equates to the rookie group. Second that they're either outright lying, or intentionally skirting the truth so that they can increase the mass of their e-peen.

not historics. ALMS at Laguna way back in ancient history. I remember Derek Bell in an quattro, a ferrari challenge race with novice rev matching at turn 10, the BMW open cockpit Le Mans car, and the Panoz.

I was at that race..the Panoz were so frickin loud. I saw Derek complain about how bad the toyo T1S tires were on track in front of tons of Audi enthusiasts...it was hilarious. Michael Galati was telling him to hush.

Well, I doubt Steve screwed up saying D group was mostly the real race cars, and I know for a fact that my car had a "D" on the windshield for my first ever track day.

Here is a pic of my car, and you can clearly see the "D" on the windshield:

In this picture, you can see the "A" on the Porsche, and also see there is no instructor in the car.

Again,

BMW Glub is the opposite of the Audi Club in this respect..so sometimes I get confused since I teach for both. Hooked on Driving says "A" drivers are beginners...and "D" is RACE group. It all depends on the group. Audi Club also uses X and Y for instructors.

NASA uses numbers not letters and TMR uses words to differentiate groups!!! OMFG what group should I sign up for?!?!?!?

good bet is to read the descriptions that each club gives. better bet is to not care about the group. best bet is to show up to all days possible so you'll know all of the group names
