HD Retrofit/Module
I pursued this same interest with BMW - told not possible. Then I found an HD module for the 325 at realoem.com at this link http://realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?...&btnr=65_1597& hg=65&fg=05. My dealer ordered it for me - about $425. Found out from their intall tech that the HU in my model (HiFi - not Logic 7) would not work with this module. Interesting that I could order the module though.........I honestly wonder at times if there isn't some agreement between BMW North America to make this not possible and to not make it easy to develop a MOST adapter to use XM instead of Sirius .....all to help Sirius with its market share....just my $.02. |

But if you get HD radio, you lose the RTTI functionality.

The HD Radio module controls all of the radio functions for the radio including the standard FM/AM/WB for the car. It is interfaced through a MOST connection in the 5 series located in the back of the trunk. The problem is you have to program the head unit(M-ASK) to disable it's own radio functions and program the M-ASK to recognize the new control unit in the back. In order to do this, BMW will have to adapt the VO(vehicle order) on the car so that it can accept that it has HD radio. The VO comes in the car from the factory and cannot be changed except by BMW. All features are determined by the VIN. Although it is just an .xml file, which can be easilly modified, a service dept would have to be able to load this into the car at the same time they disabled normal audio functions and programmed the new HD unit in the car.
If this sounds confusing......it is. BMW tech hotline probably would'nt be able to figure out how to do this much less your service dept(techs or svc adv's). Plus there is no guarantee that a new software update to the car would even recogize HD radio control unit in the US spec E90. It is called IBOC(HD Radio). and we can't get it, yet. Maybe I'll submit a case to BMW to find out if they would do this if someone paid and if it is possible. Until then........ |
