Being an avid EVO reader, they just prefer the saloon it seems, its low numbers make it the cooler option IMO.

For a start, they rate the E90 M3 over the coup, in both looks and handling, and a 335i saloon is 75kg lighter than the same coupe! Who said family cars are boring?

e92 335i SE: Unladen (EU) - 1600 (1615)

My new 335i Tourer is 200KG!!!! heavier than the 330i saloon I just sold.

Yes - it feels like i've got three extra 12 stone passengers on board all the time!

Strange why a 335i weighs 50kg more than its equivalent 330i model? I'm sure 2 turbos and a bit of hose & intercooler don't weight that much!

The figures dont add up??????
How can the saloon be 65 Kgs lighter but still 0.1 secs slower to 62

The saloon has a 0.32 drag coef as opposed to 0.30 in the coupe. Is this the reason it is slower?

I thoight the saloon had a better drag coef...

The 5 series has better drag coef than a e9x also.

Different engine block also - the 335i block is based on the previous E46 330i bottom end which is stronger than the lightweight alumnium block used in the current E9x 330i. Plus intercooler, oil cooler, larger water pump, hydraulic steering rack as opposed to electric, larger brakes... adds up quickly!

As I was writing it, a list of extra parts was building up in my mind!

Didn't know about the E46 bottom end - is that a cast iron block then?

Evo.co.uk responded to Cyd's CV and said they're really wanting an automatic but may still respond. Fortunately, her lefthandedness isn't an issue.

Tony beat me to it

BMW made a lot of noise about the N52 lightweight magnesium alloy engine in the 330i, but so far as I understand it they concluded that it was not robust enough for turbo charging.

As a result the 335i was built using an entirely new, heavier, but stronger engine block.

Well, lucky for me, my car got chosen and I've just got back from spending the day with the Evo boys

Can't beat a day in the (sort of) sun talking and driving cars with decent chaps.

Look out for the issue in about 5 weeks time

Cheers

Ben
