3M tape ruining paint?
Whatsup guys,
I'm new to the forum . Just got my Alpine White 2006 BMW 330i and I'm ready to mod it out (already installed the blacklines). I think this forum might have been one of the things that convinced me to get it. So I have a quick question. I was planning on getting a spoiler or some splitters to put on the car. My friend told me that 3m paint, or anything you put on the car will kind of ruin the paint. He said it will fade at different speeds (the outside and the part that is covered, ex. emblems, spoilers, etc.) So if you want to take it off after a year or so, you will see a difference in the color of paint. Is he correct or is he full of ? |

That's true to a certain extent. We live in seattle bro, there isnt enough sun to fade anything. I say that you just mod the shit out of it

I had a lip spoiler on my E46 for 5+ years and took it off when I sold the car.
Took some effort to get off and alot of xenit/goo gone/etc to get all the tape residue off but after cleanup and wax, you could not tell it was ever there. This was on titan slvr. I don't know if you have the same result with all colors. I would imagine black might require a machine polish to make it look consistent. |

Unless your car is 'baking' out in the sun 24/7 everyday, over years of time, then sure you may have some fade if you remove something from the paint, as the paint under the tape will have not been exposed to the sunlight - usually easier to tell on a darker color like black/red/blue, and very hard to tell on a light color like white or silver.
However, 99% of the time, using a lubricant (Goo-Gone, Goop-off, WD-40, etc) will easily remove the tape residue from the car. Then buff & wax the area where the tape was on the paint and everything will look normal with no signs of fading what so ever. |
