The biggest problem with putting a nonrefundable deposit down, is that it locks you in to the deal with that dealer. One of the biggest problems I have seen is dealers selling cars they do not have allocation for.
So you put in your order and give them the nonrefundable deposit, then you find out that the dealer is out of allocation slots for 2 month, so your production day is 8 weeks out. Now you have to wait (you dont have a choice to goto another dealer) 16 weeks for delivery. Think about it from a financial perspective as well, you are giving the dealer money with no garuntee of a delivery date. If the scenario above happens, your $2k is locked in and not making a single point of interest. The shadey part is that the majority of dealers ask for $500-1000 to place the order and they are almost always refundable. The dealer will only run a basic credit check (some don't even do this) at the time of the order. What happens when your car comes in and for some reason, you do not qualify for the loan or the variables such as interest rate, etc dont add up. You are going to be at the dealers mercy to get your $2k back. Just my $.02 |
