North Jersey Service?
Anyone have a place they can recommend I send my e90 to replace a leaky gasket? Prestige BMW was $964 + tax and it's only a ~$100 part...

I did ask her, she said the part was around $100 but it took 4 hours to take everything off to fix it. That's why I was wondering if there was another service place I could use that would have cheaper labor.

well it depends what it is,
valve cover gasket and head gasket are 2 hugely different things, I couldn't recommend anyone local as I only do my own mechanical work As far as how long you could drive on that isn't really anything you could put a time frame on, Can you physically see your oil leak when you pop the hood?

Ok by the sounds of the cost list Id say head gasket,
here is a diagram of the valve cover gasket, http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...37&hg=11&fg=15 Its shown as #2, This is the head gasket, http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...35&hg=11&fg=15 its listed as #5, Thing is its shown as costing over $200, The oil passageways are the 5 square holes that you see to the side of the gasket, Pretty mush where the line above the "5" is pointing to, This (and the other side) are the only oil passageways through the head, But the costs of these parts conflict your quote, The valve cover is listed at $40, and the head gasket is $200, Id need to see it to advise you further, Or you could ask prestige exactly what gasket it was, I'm sure they have it on record from your VIN

if its the valve cover gasket i can do it for you, if they said valve gasket maybe the meant valve seals in the actual head itself, what is the car doing? just leaking oil down the side of the engine or is it burning oil thru the exhaust

It's the valve cover gasket they said. They said the parts were $97 and the labor was 7.2 hours.
