Help me choose a subwoofer?

I have been doing some research on upgrading my stereo with a sub. I've mainly been looking over at crutchfield.com because they seem to be a reputable company and I've had good luck with them over the years. Anyways, I've been searching for one 12" sub that is efficient and has a low frequency range and I'm wondering about this set-up.

Then, I came across this style of box which is just a standard type sealed box with a large face. I though I could use the nice box the boston comes in, and then make a "faceplate" and cover it in some carpet that matches the trunk. Let me know if I'm on the right track. Basically, I want a system that's not too ubnoxious but gives some nice added bass, is composed of quality components, but doesn't break the bank. I think I could do this set-up for about $500 bucks.

I'm not familiar with the SP555. Who makes that? I've also heard that the JL stuff is excellent, but the price is way up there for something like a W6. I'm trying to keep this around $500 bucks if possible.

I would buy some better equipment second hand. You can probably find a JL 10 or 12" subwoofer+enclosure and a JL 250/1 amp off eBay or Craigslist for $300 total, and put the rest of the money into a quality install.

Oh, and ditch that "faceplate" idea. Serves no purpose, other than pure cosmetics, and I'm certain it would have a negative effect on sound quality/quantity.

I was just trying to go for something more than a standard box. Any other ideas are greatly appreciated. I was talking to a buddy of mine and he has 2 10" Alpine Type R's never used in the the factory packaging that he said I could have for free. I was thinking of getting this box:

But what type of amp would you recommend?
Would this be a worthwhile setup?

If you're going with Boston, get the better Rockford amps, the "power" series. I'm not too familiar with their subs for car sound, but they make excellent home speakers, I'm guessing their car line would be very good as well.

I have a 6yr old Rockford "power" series 851X, and it has excellent sound quality with plenty of power. It's rated at about 125rms x 4 into 4ohms.'
I'll be using it to power my 135i front comps and 2 SWS 2ohm subs, OEM location, 8". At 2 ohms the amp is rated at 215rms.

I like RF's power series more than their punch products. The power's are well built, with clean and efficient spec's, and you could get a used one for low cost I'm sure. I got it in 03 for a very good discount online, brand new, it was about $450.

In every car I've ever owned, I've had a different system. The best system I've had is a 10" JL Audio W6 with the Alpine MRP-M650 Mono Amplifier. I think you should try it out because the sound quality is amazing, not to mention the mind rattling bass!
