my thoughts exactly.

this doesn't bode well for those that wish to preserve the limitless sections.

I've been on the 'bahn in super dense fog. I pulled into the first rest stop I came across to wait it out and could still hear cars screaming by. Some German drivers are complete nutcases.

A guy on another board said he talked to someone in Germany that said this:

Quote:
I asked another person here who is in Germany about it and this is what he said:

Near Braunschweig, yes. Thunderstorm, a LOT of rain, but the sun was shining from directly above the horizon through the rain. Slippery road, fog rising from the hot and wet road, and the glaring sun directly in their eyes obviously were too much for most of the drivers...

Carol
I'm not so sure speed had a lot to do with this. Having driven in similar conditions before it's difficult to drive even with sunglasses on.

It won't happen in our lifetime. The unrestricted sections of the Autobahn is to Germany like firearms are to Americans. There is enough resistance in other parties to not let it happen anytime soon.

WHOA! Reminds me of back in 1995 when an almost 200 car pileup happened on the I-10 Bayway bridge going into downtown Mobile because of fog. Only one fatality, a woman burned to death in her '88 Accord, still makes me so sad thinking about it today. They installed a $4 million fog warning system that varied the speed limit afterwards, and unless they fixed it recently it hasn't been working since either Hurricane Katrina or Ivan. I think it still is the largest crash in U.S. history

I will always carry an emergency glass breaking hammer in my car, I learned something from that woman who died.

Did you notice how most of those cars were safe and properly working vehicles? If that happened on most interstates in the US with our bad drivers and plethora or junkers, alot of people would have been killed.

Yeah. Our licensing system is far too lax, and awards the ability to drive to just about any moron who walks in to a DMV. I remember a story on Edmunds.com that I read a year ago, covering a driver safety program, where two young girls with valid drivers licenses had no idea how to put an automatic Mustang into Drive. We need a strict drivers licensing system like the one the Finnish use.

I climbed into a Mustang with two girls who both had valid Michigan driver licenses. Neither knew how to get the car in Drive. That was a shocker.

Anyways, an accident on that scale had the potential to be much worse. Speaks volumes about either the luck or the driving prowess of the Germans there that day.

Sounds like a horrific accident. To those who was involved in the crash that restricted speed may make a lot of sense right now
