Tires for 335i coupe
I am looking to replace the stock RFTs. Any suggestions??
I am looking at the Bridgestone Potenza RE960AS Pole Position. 225/40ZR18 (front) and 265/35ZR18 (rear). The problem I see is that the rear is not the exact same size as the stock tire. The stock is 255/35-18 however the RE960AS don't come in that size. Is there going to be a problem with the increased size? Any help please. Thanks |

Lots of posts in there. You'll find mine as well if you click on the uber helpful "search" button.
I wound up with the T1-R's and I like them. Was also considering the GS-D3's but they didn't have the sizes I wanted. And for some weird reason I just wasn't feeling the Asymmetrics, though they're supposedly better than the GS-D3's. Good luck on the search! |

I just about blew my load when I saw the RE-11's... both for test results as well as how they actually look! Awesome tread pattern/s.
However, then I noticed they are 1 lb HEAVIER than the stock RFT's as with many of these max/extreme performance tires. PS2's are fairly light, but I noticed that even lighter are the Hankook V12 (forget the rest of the name) and they also have pretty good reviews. They are pretty inexpensive too. I don't know if lighter means less sidewall support or what, but who knows... |

How accurate are the tire weights on spec sheets posted on TireRack? For example, Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 235/35R19 and 275/30R19 are both listed as 26 lbs while there is definitely more rubber on 275's.

I wonder about the accuracy too. According to Tire Rack, using stock ZSP 18" sizes:
stock RFT's = 25lb front, 26lb rear RE-11's = 26lb front, 27 lb rear PS2's = about 24lb's both, don't remember exactly Hankook V12's = 23lb front and rear Tires are farther OUT on the rotating mass than the wheels, so weight has to be important just like with wheels. I don't know why most max/extreme performance tires are heavier? |

1) On an M3 post, they were compared with a bunch of tires using the Michelin PS2 as a benchmark. Although it came in second in overall performance to the Dunlop Direzas, its dry traction and (especially) its wet traction was superior to even the PS2 benchmark. 2) I swap my summers for winter tires 4-5 months out of the year in the Mid-Atlantic, and they are non-runflats. They have only had one incident over the three seasons I have driven them, where I took a nail, but was close to my Merchants Tire store that mounted them. (OBTW, both the winter tire setup and the Hankooks came from Tire Rack, thank you very much!) 3) The Hankooks are quieter, grippier, and more forgiving than the Bridgestone bricks. 4) I get a $50 rebate during the month of August at Tire Rack! I must say, I liked the sidewall stiffness of the Bridgestones, but couldn't come to grips (no pun intended) with the price and overall performance. The rears were ready for replacement, and I had a bubble form on the driver side front. So for the price of two front tires, I paid for a set of four Hankooks. A DEC 2008 Motor Trend article on Hankook described the following perceptions of a Hankook v12-shod BMW 5-Series: "Building up a healthy speed and yanking the wheel for turn one (a nice, sharp right), your first impression is you're going too slow. The Bimmer's chassis, along with the impressive grip of the Ventus V12s, encourage you to bury the pedal further the next time around. In fact, Hankook's performance tires display impressive grip throughout the course, and making them scream takes considerable speed -- more than most people would be comfortable trying on such a compact track. More scientific examination yields similar results, too, as the Ventus line has racked up platitudes and comparison test wins in German car magazines such as AutoBild and Auto, Motor und Sport." So, that's my .02 worth from a e90 335i sedan driver who drives it like he stole it! |
