I just have a bad feeling that BMW is going to go all out to make the N55 series as tune-unfriendly as possible. We'll just have to see.

To minimize latency, you'd want to pick the smallest single that will do the job right.

Single doesn't necessitate 'big', just 'big enough'.

If BMW's goal is no-lag, then they need a single turbo that is as small as possible, while still able to produce 300 hp before efficiency collapses.

What they end up choosing will dictate how much more top end you can get out of that setup.

It could be a little more efficient if it's 'just big enough'... or a lot better if it's got plenty of headroom.

I'm basically saying that just because it's a single, we shouldn't assume it's some 30R or whatever.

It may be so, but at the same time this engine would not have been such a success without the tuning options.

Fully variable valve timing systems such as valvetronic work miracles with forced induction and low end response so I'm holding out hope for a "modestly" sized turbo. With that said, the N55 is very likely to be very tune unfriendly.

i completely agree. would have got something else if it wasn't so easy to tune when my warranty expires.

I've heard rumors of all digital and encrypted communication on the N55...rather than the 'simple' analog communication in the N54. The tuners will be tested...

Agreed, but if you look at the pictures, it looks pretty big compared to the little snails. Not to mention, the placement and the fact that its just one Turbo which will help to make it easier to retrofit aftermater Turbos.

Unless tuners can break valvetronic, all other tuning will essentially be for not.

Maybe my idea of a standalone ECU wasn't so over the top after all.
